The rock mountain stands tall and proud, guarding secrets from the centuries past. 📸 This aerial view showcases the grandeur of the ancient rock fortress built by King Kasyapa over 1,500 years ago. Close to the top of the fortress, there’s a Lion’s Gate; a stairway with two massive lion paws made up of stone on either side. The legend has it that there was once a lion’s face sculpted into the rock as well, but it’s been corroded by the elements over the years. And that’s how Sigiriya - which translates as ‘lion rock’ - got its name.
