August – Onam Festival of Kerala
Celebrated in memory of King Mahabali and as a Harvest Festival, Onam is a major festival of Kerala. Pookalam (flower rangoli), traditional costumes, Onam sadya, and cultural programs are the special attractions of this festival. To experience the traditions and culture of Kerala, one should definitely visit Kerala during Onam.
October – Gujarat Navratri and Kolkata/Odisha Durga Puja
This festival of worship of Shakti is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India. The Garba and Dandiya festivals in Gujarat are world famous, while the grand Durga Puja pavilions, cultural programs and Sindoor Khela in Kolkata and Odisha are worth seeing.
October – Mysore Dussehra and Kullu Dussehra
Mysore Dussehra in Karnataka is a grand celebration of royal traditions and culture. The Mysore Palace illuminated with thousands of lamps, Jambu Sawaari, traditional arts and fireworks are the main attractions of this festival. Kullu Dussehra in Himachal Pradesh is also famous for its local deities, folk dances and cultural heritage.
November – Pushkar Fair, Rajasthan
Rajasthan's Pushkar Fair is a beautiful celebration of folk culture! With camel and horse trading, folk music, folk dance, camel races, handicraft market and Hot Air Balloon Ride, this fair attracts NRIs, PIOs and photo tourists from all over the world.
December – Hornbill Festival, Nagaland
The Hornbill Festival, held at the Kisama Heritage Village in Nagaland, is the most famous cultural festival in Northeast India.
The main objective of this festival is to showcase Naga culture through traditional costumes, folk dance, music, local food and handicrafts to the world. Known as the "Festival of Festivals", this event offers a unique opportunity to experience Naga culture and traditions up close.
