‘Large-scale’ bribery and smuggling sting at Indian airports

SIX senior Indian Customs officials have been arrested, along with 13 other people, in connection with an alleged bribery and smuggling ring involving several Indian airports, writes Thelma Etim.

An assistant commissioner, two superintendents, two inspectors and an official from Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) International Airport – are among 19 who have been detained in the investigation, reveals the country’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in an official statement.

After a concerted search at Trichy, a substantial amount of cash was seized, whilst a cache of documents was also impounded after similar searches took place at the airports of Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, along with the residences of public servants, the bureau discloses.

“It was alleged that large-scale smuggling of contraband goods through the Trichy airport was going on…with Customs officials [allegedly] obtaining undue advantages from smugglers for [allegedly] allowing [the importation] of goods from Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia etc, without payment of Customs duties, thereby causing huge revenue losses to the government of India,” asserts the CBI statement.

Is air cargo facing another global slump?

THE air cargo business is facing the prospect of another damaging global slump, latest trends and indicators suggest, writes Nigel Tomkins.

Capacity growth is now outstripping demand amidst a structural slowdown in global trading conditions – as illustrated by the fall in the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) to its lowest level since 2016 – which is causing factory export order books to turn negative in China, Japan and the USA, according to data collected by airline association IATA.

Statistics released by the association show that current demand, measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTKs), rose by only 2.7 per cent in June 2018, compared to the booming markets of the same period last year.

This latest trend is a continuation of the slowdown in air cargo growth that began earlier in 2018. Growth for the first half of 2018 stands at 4.7 per cent, less than half that of the 2017 period.

The government today said that JNPT, Railways and state governments of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra will enter into a pact tomorrow for implementing Rs 8,574.79 crore Indore- Manmad Railway Line Project.

"An MoU will be signed tomorrow between JNPT- Ministry of Shipping, Ministry of Railways, Govt of Maharashtra and Govt of Madhya Pradesh for implementation of 362 km Indore- Manmad New Railway Line Project," the shipping ministry said in a statement.
