🚨 GROWER ADVISORY | ADVERSE WEATHER EVENT 🚨
In view of the upcoming adverse weather conditions, with snowfall forecasted across major valley locations, all growers are strongly advised to take immediate preventive measures to safeguard their orchards and trellis systems.
Important Advisory Points:
• Immediately fold and securely close all hail-nets along with the top wires.
No trellis system is designed to withstand the load of snow accumulated over hail-nets. Failure to do so may lead to structural collapse.
• Ensure correct installation of cross cables and anchoring.
A hail-net system is unstable without properly installed and anchored cross cables. Cross cables must always run over the hail-net, not below it, to provide stability against strong winds. Installation of cross cables below the hail-net compromises system strength and increases failure risk.
• Use correct system specifications.
The use of properly dimensioned cross cables and fruit wires is essential to prevent tension-related failures and ensure long-term system performance.
• Anchors play a critical role in system integrity.
In most system failures, anchors are the primary point of weakness rather than poles. Anchors must be installed at adequate depth and designed to provide sufficient holding strength for orchard conditions.
• Post-event system maintenance is mandatory.
After every major adverse weather event, trellis systems must be inspected for alignment issues and re-tensioned as required to restore system stability and performance.
• Special consideration for heavy soils.
In heavy soil conditions, anti-sinking plates are crucial in preventing pole settlement and subsequent tension-related failures.
