Difference Between Mother Vessel and Feeder Vessel
In container shipping, Mother Vessels and Feeder Vessels play different but complementary roles in moving cargo efficiently across the globe.
Mother Vessel
Large ocean-going vessel operating on main trade routes
Connects major hub ports (e.g., Asia-Europe, Asia-US)
Mother vessels are massive, designed for high volume (10,000+ TEUs), while feeder vessels are much smaller, designed for regional, smaller loads.
Does not usually call at smaller ports.
Purpose: Long-distance transportation between major international ports.
Feeder Vessel,
Smaller vessel operating on short-sea routes.
Connects minor ports to major hub ports.
Lower container capacity compared to mother vessels.
Acts as a link between local ports and global trade routes.
Feeders, with capacities usually around 300-2,000 TEUs, "feed" cargo to and from these larger vessels, which can exceed 24,000 TEU capacity.
Purpose: Collecting and distributing cargo to/from mother vessels.
