India’s railway history began in the 19th century under British rule and played a huge role in connecting major cities like Bombay (Mumbai), Calcutta (Kolkata), and Shimla.

16 April 1853 – India’s first passenger train ran from Bombay (Bori Bunder) to Thane.

In 1866 – The line was connected from Kolkata to Delhi.

1903 – The Kalka–Shimla Railway was opened.
