❓ Did you know that...
🚴 ♀🚴 ♂ Electric bikes have an incredibly ancient history.
⏱ We need to go back in time about 150 years.
Since the birth of the first speeds, in fact, we tried to apply steam engines to them. Only at the end of the nineteenth century bikes appeared with electric motors. The main problem was batteries, with huge dimensions and weight compared to the ones used now. 🔋🔋🔋
👨 🔬 In this photo you can see Ben Bowden, proud to show his creation, while the audience behind him observes him with an attitude between perplexed and amazed.
🇬🇧 The photo was taken in September 1946, during a fair in London with the significant name of ′′ Britain Can Make It ": at the end of World War II Europe was in very difficult economic conditions, and the Marshall Plan still far from coming. In this context, it was important to convince citizens that ′′ Great Britain can do it ".
⚙ Among the various objects of common use redesigned and revised for the occasion there was also this ′′ Bicycle of the Future ". 🚲
The name chosen by Bowden wanted to capture visitor s' fantasy. Unfortunately, it turned out to be prophetic in a sense that Bowden didn't want: the bike was never produced in a large scale. Initial interest had been there: for example, the king of Egypt Farouk had ordered six. The bike was originally supposed to be produced in Wales, in a factory that gave jobs to unemployed miners, but the plan didn't even start.

⏱Dobbiamo tornare indietro nel tempo di circa 150 anni.
Fin dalla nascita dei primi velocipedi infatti si cercò di applicare ad essi i motori a vapore allora di moda. Solo alla fine del diciannovesimo secolo cominciarono ad apparire bici con motori elettrici. il problema principale all’epoca erano le batterie, con dimensioni e peso enormi rispetto a quelle usate adesso. 🔋🔋🔋
👨🔬In questa foto si può notare l’orgoglio di Ben Bowden nel mostrare la sua creazione, mentre il pubblico alle spalle lo osserva con un atteggiamento fra il perplesso e lo stupito.
🇬🇧La foto è stata scattata nel settembre del 1946, durante una fiera a Londra dal significativo nome di “Britain Can Make It”: alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale l’Europa era in condizioni economiche difficilissime, e il Piano Marshall ancora lungi dall’arrivare. In questo contesto, era importante convincere i cittadini che “la Gran Bretagna ce la può fare”.
⚙Fra i vari oggetti di uso comune riprogettati e rivisti per l’occasione vi era anche questa “Bicycle of the Future”.🚲
Il nome scelto da Bowden voleva catturare la fantasia dei visitatori. Purtroppo, si rivelò profetico in un senso che Bowden non voleva: la bici infatti non fu mai prodotta in grande scala. L’interesse iniziale c’era stato: ad esempio, il re dell’Egitto Farouk ne aveva ordinate sei. La bici doveva essere inizialmente prodotta in Galles, in una fabbrica che dava lavoro a dei minatori disoccupati, ma il progettò non partì nemmeno.
🚴Da allora le bici elettriche si sono evolute non poco.
