Lufthansa Set to Bring Alitalia Back to the Skies

Alitalia is gearing up for a comeback, and Lufthansa is ready to make it happen. Despite years off the radar, the brand still holds strong appeal in the market, and the new majority shareholder of ITA Airways is betting on travelers' and cargo operators' loyalty to the iconic name. However, Alitalia’s revival will only take place once ITA reaches its breakeven point—something expected to happen as early as this year.
This was one of the key takeaways from ITA’s first post-merger press conference, recently held in Rome, where the airline’s new leadership laid out their vision for the future.
“We believe that the Alitalia brand, which ITA owns, carries significant value and potential,” said ITA’s CEO during the press event. “Before we consider how and when to bring it back, we want to ensure ITA is in a stable position so we can relaunch the brand in the best possible way. We don’t have all the details yet, but leveraging the power of this brand is definitely on the table.”
For the past few weeks, ITA Airways' management has been fine-tuning its new business plan, which outlines a year of consolidation in 2025, followed by an ambitious long-haul expansion in 2026 and 2027. Eberhart highlighted that by 2025, ITA’s fleet is expected to reach around 100 aircraft. The airline also plans to ramp up hiring starting in 2026, in step with its fleet expansion.
The goal? Achieving sustainable breakeven—balancing costs and revenues—by the end of this year and setting the stage for growth in 2025 and beyond. And for those wondering about ticket prices, Eberhart reassured that ITA will align with market trends, with no drastic changes driven by Lufthansa’s involvement.
With a solid strategy in place and an iconic brand waiting in the wings, ITA Airways is preparing for an exciting new chapter one that could bring Alitalia’s legendary name back to the skies.
