Can you guess which is the second most spread Italian family name in the United States of America?

Accordingly to the statistics in the United States, the second most overspread Italian family name is Marino, with more or less 24,280 people.

What’s the origin of this surname and where the Marinos are most present nowadays?

Marino in Italian means “of the sea”, while the surname comes probably from the transformation of the first name Marino to a surname.
The family Marino originates mainly from Genoa, even if the surname was, according to some sources, found first in Orvieto in 1068.

The Marinos in the Republic of Genoa, powerful maritime republic, were very influential figures. In the 13th century they moved to Sicily and being a noble family, they immediately obtained lands and connections. They were warriors and church men, diplomats and men of law. They occupied extremely high public positions in politics and social life.

In the United States, the Marinos live mostly in New York, with approximately 5,800 people who found a home here. The second most populated place by Marinos is New Jersey with a little bit more than 3,000. NY and NJ are followed by Florida, California and Pennsylvania.

In Italy, besides its northern origins, Marinos today mostly live in Sicily and Campania, and they are spread also in Calabria, Lombardy and Piedmont.

We all know that, besides the number of Italian immigrants who settled abroad, Italian culture has a deep imprint on American culture. But the question here is which part of Italy they were mostly coming from?

A recent study has revealed which Italian surnames are mostly represented in the USA.
Would you ever guess which Italian surname is the most represented in the States?
🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
And the winner is……….. Russo.
Russo surname has its origin in Sicily in the first place and in minor numbers, you can find it in Campania and Puglia region. The surname derives from the dialectal pronunciation of the color red (rosso) and usually refers to somebody with ginger hair or other physical characteristics that recall the red color.

🥈The second place is held by Marino surname.
Marino refers to something or someone that “belongs to the sea”. This surname has been known as originating from Genova (Liguria region). However, besides their “northern” origin, since mid-1200, many Marinos have been holding high-up positions in the government of the Kingdom of Sicily.
