A wonderful cousin experience! Jennifer came home!! Our great grandfather, Giuseppe Nicotera, emigrated from Castagna in 1887. We explored the town including the ruins of the nearby Abbazia di Corazzo, originally a Benedictine monastery founded in the 11th century. We spent time in San Pietro Apostolo just being a part of the community at local restaurants and bars and, of course, The Big Bench!! There was an incredible day at the beach and quick trips to Catanzaro and Tiriolo for initial glimpses. Jennifer!! You have to come back!!! We need more time!! Please come home again soon ❤️

After Italy unified in 1861, the south did not rise with it. Roads, schools, and investment lagged for generations, taxation fell unevenly, and a wave of poverty pushed millions of Southern Italians to leave the only home their families had ever known.

Historians still debate how much of this was deliberate policy versus geography, timing, or neglect, and that argument is far from settled. What is not disputed is the outcome: a divide that shaped where an entire diaspora comes from.

That divide is part of why so many of us are piecing this history together instead of simply inheriting it.
