Save this. Hopefully you never need it.
If your U.S. passport goes missing abroad, here's the exact sequence:
Report it first. Go to travel.state.gov?utm_source=fb_page&utm_medium=SmarterTravel&utm_campaign=publer and file online. Your passport gets cancelled within 1 business day, protecting you from identity theft.
Get to the embassy. Find the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate and tell them you have upcoming travel. They'll prioritize you.
Bring these four things: a 2x2" passport photo, a photo ID, proof of U.S. citizenship (birth certificate or a photocopy of your missing passport), and your travel itinerary.
The result: in most cases an emergency passport is issued the next business day. Valid for up to 1 year.
One thing most people miss: embassies generally can't issue passports on weekends or holidays. Don't wait if you're traveling soon.
