Rumor has it that the three rulers who commissioned the Cathedrals of Palermo, Cefalù and Monreale did so around the same timeframe - 1100's. It soon became a competition - who could hire the most impressive artist to create the most spectacular Cathedral. Boys will be boys... Well, in my humble opinion it wasn't a competition at all!

The Cathedral of Monreale brags 2,2 tonnes of gold mosaics. Besides the sheer oppulance, what I love most amount the Cathedral of Monreale is its running theme - tales of the Old and New Testament are depicted in chronological order along the encircling walls, all leading to the Messiah - stunningly portrayed inside the Chancel - with the Apostle Peter on his left and the Apostle Paul on his right.

I love the bizantine/gothic feel - how they keep the lights low to enhance the sentiment of goth, how the light shimmers off the gold tiny mosaics, how each mosaic is slightly different, how everything blends Arab and Christian beliefs.

It's worth the trip! Let me show you 😉

This is your friendly reminder that you are never too old to travel when you have a beautiful family who supports you, a customized itinerary and a spunky attitude like my new bestie Mrs Viola.

We spent a week together and she taught me that with the right attitude, a fantastic sense of humor and support from her incredible family, you can do anything; even climb Mt Erice to soak in that incredible view at the tender age of 89.

One of my favorite moments was when we visited the Florio winery in Marsala and the guide explained that their most prized and ancient barrels of wine date back to 1939 - only 2 left - and lots of "ohhhhhs" were expressed by the crowd in admiration.
Mrs. Viola didn't skip a beat; she leaned into me and with a million dollar smile and spunky smirk whispered: Well, my dear, I'm older than those barrels! 😂💜

And... she uses her ageful advantage to admire and take pictures with all the handsome men of Sicily!

Just love her to pieces and I miss them already! I will visit!!!💝

This is one of my happy places even though everytime we come, I bring moody weather. Maybe because I just love watching the clouds roll over the mountain peaks on their way to the ocean. It's an incredible view - perfect silence only disturbed by the roosters in the morning...

Uncle Dino is the best! We met him 20 years ago and he's become family! He has restructured his family home in the hills of Gioiosa Marea. 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms a pool and a pay it forward garden. You plant something for the next guests and eat what you find ready in the greenhouse. The salad was amazing!!!

The boys helped Dino with yard prep and we enjoyed an amazing family feast on Saturday. Videos to follow.

Calatafimi Segesta is having the crucifix festival May 1-3. It's a massive celebration full of traditions! The festival is only held when the toeh can afford it - last time it was 14 years ago. You need to purchase a ticket to attend and use the provided bus service to reach the town as parking won't be possible!
