OUTBACK SOUTH AUSTRALIA with EYRE & YORKE PENINSULAS - August-October 2026
Days 19 - 23 - north west coast, the end of the Yorke Peninsula, SA.
Heading north up through the west coast of the Yorke Peninsula, we were struck by how fertile and agricultural this area of SA is! Endless canola and barley fields and sheep stations. We have mostly been to the arid outback desert areas of SA previously, so we guess that’s why we’ve noticed.
Driving from Innes National Park - the southern tip of the Yorke - we went through Warooka and bought yummy fresh local South Yorke seafood to cook for dinner (prawns and whiting), saw beautiful Magazine Bay near Point Turton (but too cold to swim 🥶), Maitland and then onto Moonta for a couple of nights.
Tony was very disappointed that the Moonta Mines train wasn’t running as it would have given us a good insight into the century old copper mining operation, like we had at Burra. The miners came from Cornwall. We still walked around what we could access and the locals we spoke to were delightful. We ate a pasty like they would have had for lunch in the mines.
On to Kadina and into a very helpful tyre place we’d booked into with a caravan tyre issue, who diagnosed a cracked rim (causing a slow leak) but they were unable to help us, so that has to wait for Port Augusta but they referred us on to their colleagues. Tony had already swapped the tyre for the spare so we weren’t in any danger. Someone we met on the road reminded us that maintenance and breakages on the road are just like at home - they always happen, but sometimes you just wish for it to run smoothly 😔 as it’s stressful working out solutions.
More wharves and sleepy seaside towns of Port Broughton and Port Victoria validated our decision to not spend a lot of time on this side of the Yorke. Not a lot to capture our interest as we don’t eat out at pubs every night or fish a lot. We free camped in Nelshaby at Lawrie Park which was really clean but very cold overnight.
Up closer to Port Augusta, we stopped again at Point Germein for a walk on the longest jetty but it was closed due to storm damage 😩. A bonus from yummy Banh Mi pork rolls from a quirky house front stall.
We camped at Spear Creek Sheep Station for a couple of nights. You can purchase their own fresh Dorper Lamb which was great on the BBQ and also for the freezer stock. It’s pretty quiet in terms of visitor numbers as it’s still cold overnight I guess. At Spear Creek, we explored their property and gorges, walked their beautiful sunset trail and also drove through Wilmington to Alligator Gorge in the Mt Remarkable NP. Wow! You can keep going from Wilmington to Broken Hill and Sydney I learned. This was a very enjoyable couple of days all round.
