Happy birthday Bongo Herman Bongo Herman ! We were so fortunate to have Bongo Herman serve as our tour guide on Day 1 of Reggae Road Trip in April. He gave us lessons in drumming and percussion, took us around to studios and historic sites, and brought us to Trench Town for a neighborhood tour and performances. He also rode on the bus with us all day, bringing along books, instruments, records and other cultural artifacts to show us first hand. In the picture shown here, we were hanging out with bongo Herman on Brentford Road aka Studio One boulevard, a place where he recorded a number of times over the years.

In honor of his birthday today, we are sharing some songs we’ve had in steady rotation since the trip. Bongo Herman has appeared on hundreds of records across many different labels over his career. He has over 330 credits on Discogs, plus many more appearances uncredited. These three selections are songs that feature his name front and center. We definitely recommend that you check out his deep catalog!

We’re still thinking about Channel One and the loss of history that takes place when a building like that is torn down. One reason we love vinyl is that a record collection can serve as an archive and a form of historical documentation. The building may be torn down, and that is a shame, but the music that came out of that building lives on through vinyl and other mediums. This is just a sampling of albums that were recorded all or in part at Channel One studios. Some were entirely recorded and produced there, while others say things like “rhythm tracks laid at Channel One.” Some were produced and engineered by the Hoo Kim brothers themselves, while others were recorded by other producers like Junjo or Sly & Robbie renting the studio. Almost all had the Revolutionaries or the Roots Radics, or some combination of their members, involved……

On August 17th, we celebrate the birth Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican National Hero who made a profound impact on Jamaica, the United States, and the whole world through his activism, organizing, writing, and philosophies.

If you are a fan of Reggae music, you can’t help but notice the countless songs and albums that are inspired by Marcus Garvey. Similarly, when in Jamaica, you can’t help but notice that his image appears all over the place, from paintings, to statues, to currency.

In order to celebrate today, we decided to highlight a couple of Marcus Garvey themed songs by artists that were featured at Reggae Road Trip:

Johnny Clarke “Poor Marcus”
and
Fred Locks “Black Star Liners”

It is also worth mentioning that Albert “Ilawi” Malawi, another RRT featured artist, played the drums on Black Star Liners!

After speaking on the panel at Reggae Road Trip’s “Reggae Legends Symposium” in April, a few of the legends surprised us by jumping on the mic during the rub-a-dub session that followed. Here is the moment took the mic and performed a medley of his classic songs Fever and I May Never See my Baby while runs the Taxi riddim. What a moment! Thanks to for being the venue for this event!

When it comes to Reggae Road Trip, there is the planned itinerary and the confirmed artists, and then there are the surprises. Just one example of this when we we went to Randy’s to shop for records and were surprised to meet Patrick “Scabba” Sutherland, the owner of labels like On Top and a producer for songs by artists like Ronnie Davis, The Itals, Keeling Beckford, Horace Andy, the Righteous Flames, and more. Here is a short video from when we met him, as well as a few vinyl selections we like by him. Thanks to Kingston Guided Amilcar Lewis Christopher Creary for being our guides in this portion of the trip!
