Yesterday was Bunny Striker Lee’s birthday, so we’ve been reflecting on our visit to the Bunny Lee Museum & Recording Studio with digorgonreggaelandtour_ back in April. On August 17th, we celebrate the birth Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican National Hero who made a profound impact on Jamaica, the United States, and the whole world through his activism, organizing, writing, and philosophies.

If you are a fan of Reggae music, you can’t help but notice the countless songs and albums that are inspired by Marcus Garvey. Similarly, when in Jamaica, you can’t help but notice that his image appears all over the place, from paintings, to statues, to currency.

In order to celebrate today, we decided to highlight a couple of Marcus Garvey themed songs by artists that were featured at Reggae Road Trip:

Johnny Clarke “Poor Marcus”
and
Fred Locks “Black Star Liners”

It is also worth mentioning that Albert “Ilawi” Malawi, another RRT featured artist, played the drums on Black Star Liners!

Featured in this video are clips from those songs on vinyl along with images we saw of Marcus Garvey around Kingston. This also includes images of his burial site and memorial in National Hero’s Park, which we visited with Kingston Guided

Finally, we include here a clip of Fred Locks performing Black Star Liners at the Reggae Road Trip “Reggae Legends Symposium.” A longer version of this video appears earlier in our feed, but we couldn’t talk about this song without showing a snippet again! The crowd went wild!

After speaking on the panel at Reggae Road Trip’s “Reggae Legends Symposium” in April, a few of the legends surprised us by jumping on the mic during the rub-a-dub session that followed. Here is the moment took the mic and performed a medley of his classic songs Fever and I May Never See my Baby while runs the Taxi riddim. What a moment! Thanks to for being the venue for this event!

When it comes to Reggae Road Trip, there is the planned itinerary and the confirmed artists, and then there are the surprises. Just one example of this when we we went to Randy’s to shop for records and were surprised to meet Patrick “Scabba” Sutherland, the owner of labels like On Top and a producer for songs by artists like Ronnie Davis, The Itals, Keeling Beckford, Horace Andy, the Righteous Flames, and more. Here is a short video from when we met him, as well as a few vinyl selections we like by him. Thanks to Kingston Guided Amilcar Lewis Christopher Creary for being our guides in this portion of the trip!

Happy Jamaican Independence Day!

At our Reggae Legends Symposium in April, a big topic that emerged during the discussions was how important it is for for reggae artists to not only focus on their musical craft, but also to learn how to navigate the music business.

In this clip, the legendary Johnny Clarke makes a comparison between Jamaica’s independence and an independent approach to music and business. He talks about not focusing enough on money in his earlier days, but that over the long span of his career he’s learned to seek balance between the energy he puts into the music and the financial comfort that is needed in life. This past April, attendees of the 1st annual Reggae Road Trip got to search for vinyl records all around Kingston - from record shops to historic studios and pressing plants. Stepping into places like Randy’s is like stepping into music history, and that was just one of many stops along the way! We also had a great time digging at places like Mitchie’s Record Shop and Rockers International Records , taking in the sights and sounds of historic Orange Street and the weekly Beat Street Friday’s event. We even got to buy records directly from people like Bongo Herman Bongo Herman and Sugar Minott’s family at Youthman Promotion Sound , or from a dealer at the Reggae Legends Symposium!
