This is a chance to ground yourself in a graceful adventure and, through it, discover universal roots. Our primary retreat is based in Jamaica. Every excursion is carefully designed to give you genuine exposure to true culture and nature. Our goal is to curate a spiritual, holistic and yet adventurous experience for you—this won’t be about all-day tanning, gift shop rasta hats and beachside braids. And of course there’s nothing wrong with those things, we just want to rejuvenate you in an extraordinary way, in a way that is unique and leaves a lifelong impression.

For us, business is not separate from faith — it is one of the places where faith is tested.

Islam teaches us to deal with people with honesty, fairness, transparency and ihsan: to honour our word, pay people fairly, avoid exploitation and remember that every transaction carries a responsibility before Allah.

That philosophy sits at the heart of Burgundy Roots. We want the people who travel with us, work with us and welcome us into their communities to feel respected and valued. From our local partners and guides to our guests, we believe travel should create benefit on every side.

We’re incredibly grateful for the relationship that has grown with Dr. Mustafa Briggs. We were first connected through Sacred Footsteps after a conversation about Islam in Jamaica, and they immediately thought of Mustafa because of his deep knowledge of Black history and Islam.

Afro-Muslim history is central to the work we do at Burgundy Roots because the story of Islam is also a Black story. Whether we are in Jamaica, Brazil, Colombia, or elsewhere, we intentionally make space for the histories of African and Afro-Muslim communities and the ways faith, resistance, scholarship, migration, and culture have shaped these places.

We’re proud to be among the few Muslim retreat organizations that consistently centers Afro-Muslim history as part of the travel experience, rather than treating it as a side note. Mustafa has brought incredible depth, scholarship, and perspective to that vision, and we’re deeply appreciative of the knowledge and passion he continues to share with our community.

For 12 years, I’ve been bringing people to Stush in the Bush.

We’ve planted, wandered, tasted, laughed, learned — and left a little bit of ourselves in the soil.

Now, guests I bring today are eating food that guests before them helped plant years ago.

There’s something so quietly beautiful about that.

A reminder that the best kind of travel doesn’t just pass through a place. It takes root.

And maybe this is what they mean by reaping the fruits of your labour… quite literally. 🌿

UMRAH HOMECOMING 🤍🇸🇦

There are trips that you take… and then there are journeys that stay with you.

Our Umrah Homecoming Retreat was created to be more than simply performing Umrah. It is a journey inward and outward — a chance to reconnect with Allah, deepen your understanding of your deen, build beautiful friendships and experience Saudi Arabia beyond the surface.

Over the years, we’ve been incredibly blessed to build genuine relationships and connections with people on the ground in Saudi Arabia. Those relationships allow us to create an experience that feels local, personal and authentic — from knowledgeable guides and meaningful encounters to beautiful meals, hidden corners of the cities and experiences you simply wouldn’t find travelling on your own.

And then there is the itinerary. 🤍

We put an enormous amount of thought into balancing worship and reflection with history, culture, exploration, rest and joy. Our guests have described the experience as enriching, entertaining and spiritually uplifting — with one past traveller giving it an “11/10.” Another spoke about how much they loved having everything from dhikr and ibadah to Islamic history, culture, shopping and free time woven into one journey. Islam in South Africa has a story — and we’re going there to learn it. 🇿🇦

One of those stories is that of Imam Abdullah Haron, a Qur’an scholar, imam and anti-apartheid activist whose faith shaped his commitment to justice. He died in police detention in 1969, but his legacy remains an important part of South African Muslim history.

Our Burgundy Roots South Africa Retreat is about more than beautiful scenery. We’ll explore Cape Muslim heritage, Bo-Kaap, Robben Island, the Cape of Good Hope, masjids and the history that shaped the country.

We’re also honoured to have Mustafa Briggs joining us to teach a class on the history of Islam in Africa, along with sessions on the works of Imam Al-Ghazali.
