JAPAN TAX-FREE SHOPPING IS CHANGING!
Starting November 1, 2026, Japan will change its tax-free shopping system from tax-free at the time of purchase to a refund system.
What’s changing?
Before: You could purchase eligible items tax-free at the store.
From November 1, 2026: You will pay the price including consumption tax first, then receive the tax refund after Customs confirms that you are taking the purchased items out of Japan.
Important: You must present the tax-free items and your passport to Customs when departing Japan, and the Customs confirmation must be completed within 90 days from the date of purchase.
