I took an amazing couple in their late 80s from Bombay, New Zealand, on a private tour of Mt. Fuji. By coincidence, we discovered this beautiful place on our way to Mishima Station and came across some monuments commemorating the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. I didn’t know that the men’s road cycling race had been held around Mt. Fuji. It was a pleasant surprise to learn something new while showing my guests around. We all enjoyed the beautiful view of Mt. Fuji, which finally appeared after being hidden behind the clouds all day.

I was lucky enough to visit Kadena Air Base in Okinawa with an American family whose father is a former Air Force officer.

Kadena is one of the largest U.S. military installations in the Far East, and it’s absolutely huge. Around 25,000 people live and work there, almost as if it were a small American town transplanted into Okinawa.

The strange part is that you’re still in Japan, but once you pass through the gate, everything suddenly feels American. The language, the currency, the people, the shops, the cars, even the atmosphere. For a moment, it felt like I had somehow crossed an invisible border without leaving Japan.

As a Japanese person and a tour guide, it was a pretty surreal experience. We normally have no way of getting inside a U.S. military facility like this, so being able to see this completely different side of Japan was fascinating.

It was definitely one of the most unusual tours I’ve ever done, and I really enjoyed experiencing it together with my American guests. Sometimes, being a tour guide takes you to places you never imagined you’d see yourself.

Choose your date, check availability, and book ahead if you can — especially if you have your heart set on sunset.

🍵 When you think of Japanese tea, matcha might be the first thing that comes to mind.
But Japan has so much more to discover.
During our recent site visit, we visited tea fields and experienced traditional hand-rolled tea making.
We also had the chance to see how Japanese tea is grown and produced, and learn more about the people and traditions behind it.
It was a completely different side of Japanese tea culture — and one we wanted to experience for ourselves.
We’re always exploring new places, meeting local people, and discovering experiences that could bring travelers closer to the real Japan.

⛩️ We visited a very special shrine in Ibaraki, Japan.
This is Oiwa Shrine, a quiet and deeply spiritual place surrounded by nature.
It is said that 188 deities are enshrined throughout the grounds, and the shrine has become known in recent years as a spiritual power spot.
During our recent site visit, we had the opportunity to explore the grounds with a shrine maiden and experience a formal visit to the shrine.
We’re always looking for places that offer something different from the usual tourist route.
Sometimes, the most memorable places are the quiet ones.

You might encounter a local Shinto festival almost every weekend in September in Tokyo. Annual festivals held by local Shinto shrines all over Japan have been a long-standing tradition, originally meant to give thanks to the deities for a good harvest. In many neighborhoods, a local association, often made up of shop and business owners, has its own mikoshi, or portable shrine. During the festival, people carry the heavy mikoshi on their shoulders and parade it around the neighborhood. These local festivals have also served another interesting purpose for Japanese people: they provide an opportunity to let off steam and release the social pressure and stress of everyday life. Carrying a heavy portable shrine, shouting and yelling, drinking, and taking part in all kinds of crazy and lively activities allow people to let go of their usual restraint for a few days each year.

Japanese people tend to be quiet and not overly outgoing in their everyday lives, but during local festivals, it can be a completely different story. People become much louder, more energetic, and more uninhibited. I think this is one of the most interesting aspects of traditional Japanese festivals.
