Last week, the Candlewick team visited Ippakuan, a traditional teahouse at the MOA Museum of Art in Atami, Shizuoka, for a Japanese tea ceremony experience🍵
While many people associate sadō (the Way of Tea) with simply preparing and drinking matcha, every aspect of the experience carries meaning—from the peaceful atmosphere of the tearoom to the seasonal decorations, hanging scroll, flowers, and tea utensils.
After learning about the history and philosophy of the tea ceremony, we prepared our own matcha and enjoyed it with traditional Japanese sweets. We also learned the meaning behind each movement and why the utensils and setting change with the seasons, giving us a deeper appreciation for Japan’s aesthetics and spirit of hospitality.
What impressed us most was how thoughtfully the entire experience was designed. From the walk to the tearoom to the atmosphere and the moment of sharing tea, every detail contributed to a single, carefully crafted story.
This approach closely reflects the way we think about PR and events at Candlewick. A memorable event is shaped not only by its program, but by the entire experience. The tea ceremony’s spirit of ichigo ichie (“one time, one meeting”) reminded us of the importance of creating meaningful moments that stay with each participant.
