TYGERBERG SCHOLAR TRANSPORT ASSOCATION

Patrick and Selobia Petersen, who has been in the business of transporting learners to school and back home for a number of years, are the founding members of the TSTA. In 2013 they felt that it was time to organize scholar transporters in the Tygerberg school region under one umbrella organisation. The driving force behind the formation of this association

was the safety of learners while en-route to school. It is our aim and objective that no child should be injured while en-route to school. To achieve this we have strict rules in place to ensure our members are compliant with the rules and regulations pertaining to transportation of learners. We have joined the Childsafe initiative who provides training and development to drivers to improve their driving skills and how to react to emergency situations. We are proud to say that from 2016 all our current members will be part of the safe to school project. We have also put in place a how is my driving initiative where the public can phone in to report bad driving behavior to a number displayed on the back of member vehicles. TSTA has grown in strides and currently 40 drivers are members of the association. We strive to support, educate, help and inform our members with regards to issues related to learners transport. We are open and welcome all scholar transporters to become part of this association. We still have much to do and learn but we have grown fast and furious not just as an organisation but also as individuals. We acknowledge also that there are scholar transport associations in other areas with the same vision, aims and objectives as ours and that we represent mostly the Tygerberg region but do have members of surrounding areas where there are no association in place. The different associations is currently in the process of forming the Western Cape Amalgamated Scholar Transport Association through which we will endeavor to engage with government in matters related to our members and scholar transport in general. SAFE TRAVEL TO SCHOOL PROJECT

Our Association has joined a Initiative called Childsafe SA together with Discovery Health to develop teams of safe and reliable learner transport drivers. The STTS (Safe Travel To School) Program is busy:
- Ensuring our vehicles are roadworthy.
- Installing tracking devices in vehicles to monitor our driving 24/7 and give us feedback on our driving and getting us to Improve.
- Testing our eyes and providing spectacles if necessary.
- Training us in first aid.
- Training us in defensive driving. We are doing this because we have your child at heart and wants to do everything possible to secure your child's safety while in transit. RULES AND REGULATIONS

Congratulations to Mr. Edmund Van Niekerk, who is a TSTA member, for being one of the safest drivers this past quarter. He won one of the prices in the incentive scheme from Childsafe. Thank you Edmund for getting learners safe to school and back home. I am certain that the parents of these learners also appreciate your effort because we as TSTA are certainly proud of you. Keep on doing what you doing.

On the 14th of May we lost a dear friend and colleague, Edward Williams, after a short illness. We take comfort in the fact that he is in a better place free of pain and suffering. We will surely miss him as a founding member of the Tygerberg Scholar Transport Association and more so as a friend. May he rest in peace.

On the 21st of October we were blessed to share in the birthday celebration of Fharoz Braaf. He invited the TSTA members to the Jack Miller park where he and his family laid out a feast to share in. Thank you Fharoz for the wonderful gesture and the opportunity to share in your and your family's joy. We had a great time and we hope that you were blessed by our presence. Thank you to all TSTA members who came...I can still taste that lekkkker cake on my lips.

The Tygerberg Scholar Transport Association Fundraising Committee reached out to Montana Settlement in Wolseley during the September school holidays. They were able to serve food to about 450 kids while they only catered for 200...makes me think about the time Jesus fed many with just a couple of fish and loafs of bread. Aunty Rhonda ministered to the kids while aunty Beulah demonstrated how to be hygienic in terms of hand/body wash. They found the need to be enormous and pray that all who becomes aware of the situation in Montana Wolseley to do something big or small to alleviate the situation. The committee expressed their heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed children clothing, items for the food parcels, preparation of the food, money and especially to committee members who took the time and effort to undertake this journey.

The Tygerberg Scholar Transport Association went to the Sive Nathi Care Centre on Mandela Day. We were really humbled by the little we could do when we handed over disposable nappies and that we were able to interact with the kids and staff. The need is really great and If you are able to assist with anything we urge you to do so. Thank you to our members who took the time to visit the centre.

Sive Nathi is a home for severely and profoundly physically and/or mentally disabled children. The home was originally started by a domestic worker from Khayelitsha in 1997. Since then she has given a home to disabled children whose parents have died, no longer want their sick children or simply cannot cope with their disabilities. The home grew from a couple of children to 42 in just a few years. There are now 62 children living at Sive Nathi, in Blackheath, cared for by 20 staff members, including one registered nurse.
