One of my favorite parts of leading tours is getting to know the people who come to Japan with us.
Some guests join us as solo travelers. Some come back and travel with us again. And sometimes, I get to see the same faces in Japan a year or two later.

I really love that.

I don’t want Japan Planned to feel like a company where you book a tour and don’t even know who your guide will be until you meet them in Japan.
I want our guests to know who will be there with them.
To have someone familiar waiting for them when they arrive.

And hopefully, by the end of the trip, I’m not just their tour leader anymore — I’m someone they feel comfortable traveling with in Japan.

One thing that makes us really happy is when guests tell us they were excited about a hotel we chose — and sometimes, that hotel was actually one of the reasons they booked the tour.

We think that says a lot.
We don’t choose hotels just to fill the itinerary. We genuinely enjoy looking for places that we think my guests will love.

And after doing this for a while, we’ve realized that the hotel can become one of the memories people take home with them.

That makes all the time we spend researching and choosing them worth it. ♡

When I was little, I often took baths with my mom.
We would talk about what happened that day, share little stories, and sometimes just enjoy a quiet moment together.
Now we’re older and we definitely don’t fit in the same bathtub anymore… 😂

But when we go to an onsen together, that feeling comes back.

For many Japanese people, an onsen trip is not just about taking a bath.
It’s a way to step away from everyday life for a little while.

Of course, travelers can visit a public bath in Tokyo or other cities.
But staying overnight in an onsen town is a completely different experience.
It’s the ryokan, the seasonal dinner, the sound of the mountains and rivers, the quiet streets at night, and the feeling of stepping into a different pace of Japan. 🇯🇵

I don’t do everything alone. Even though I lead the tours, I believe the best experiences come from connecting with the people who know each place best.

Some of these relationships come from my years working in tourism.

One of my former coworkers now works at a local tourism company that helps me arrange parts of my tours.
Before one of my trips, she even arranged a birthday gift for me to pick up at the ryokan where we were staying. ♡

It was such a thoughtful surprise, and it reminded me how much trust and connection matter in this industry.

I love Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.
They are popular for a reason, and they are places I would recommend to many travelers — especially on their first visit to Japan.

But Japan is much bigger than the places everyone knows.
Some of my favorite experiences happen when we go a little further:
a small town, a local meal, a tradition passed down through generations, or a peaceful onsen town.

I don’t think travelers have to choose between the famous places and the places beyond the usual routes.
The best trips can include both!

I’ve always loved sharing Japan with people. 🇯🇵

From growing up in Kyoto to my years working in tourism, every experience shaped the way I see travel today.

After moving to the U.S., I began seeing Japan from another perspective — not only as someone who welcomes travelers, but also as someone who understands what it feels like to discover a new place. 🌎

All of these experiences came together to shape Japan Planned.

I’m also grateful to have Saori as part of this journey. A Tokyo native and our trip planner, she brings her own hospitality experience and perspective from living abroad. ✈️

Together, we share Japan from both sides — as locals who love this country and as travelers who understand the excitement of exploring somewhere new.

I wanted to share Japan the way I would show it to my own friends. 🌿

My favorite places in Japan? Usually not Tokyo.
📍Episode 1: Ine Fishing Village | 伊根の舟屋 🚤

If you’re visiting Ine, stay overnight.

I was a little nervous before coming after hearing about the overtourism issues last year, but we visited on a weekday in mid-July, outside of Japanese holidays, and it was wonderfully peaceful.

The funaya are traditional boathouses built right on the water. Boats are kept on the ground floor, while the second floor is used as living space or to store fishing gear.

My favorite moment wasn’t a sightseeing spot—it was simply drinking freshly brewed coffee while looking out over the quiet bay in the early morning. That peaceful atmosphere alone made staying the night worth it. - Miharu
