One of my favourite experiences from Draw Closer was the day we spent in a small indigo workshop in Kyoto.

One of the things I love most about travelling creatively is watching people lose track of time.

What was meant to be an afternoon activity quickly became something much more absorbing.

Choosing designs. Sketching ideas. Painting wax onto fabric. Watching each piece slowly come to life.

Hours passed without anyone really noticing.

There’s something deeply satisfying about making things with your hands, especially in a world that moves as quickly as ours does.

Perhaps that’s why these are often the moments that stay with us longest.

The first time I visited Koyasan, I wasn’t prepared for how it would feel.

The towering cedar trees.

The silence of Okunoin.

The moss covered Jizō statues quietly holding their place in the landscape.

The way the light filters through the forest and everything seems to soften.

It’s a place that invites a different pace. One where there is nothing to achieve, nowhere to rush to, and space to simply notice.

Somewhere between art, architecture, sea air and silence, Naoshima has a way of slowing you down enough to notice things again.

These are a few moments from our recent time on the island during our current Japan journey.

We’ve had two places unexpectedly open up on our October 2026 Draw Closer to Japan tour and Naoshima is one of the places we’ll return to together.

10 nights through Japan with a small group of women, moving slowly through art islands, temples, quiet streets, shared meals and beautiful places designed to help us reconnect with creativity, curiosity and ourselves.

If you’ve been quietly following along and wondering if this might be your moment, you can find more details via the link in bio or send us a message.

A small shift in circumstances means we now have two places available on our upcoming Draw Closer to Japan journey.

October 29 – November 8, 2026.

Draw Closer is a small group experience centred around drawing, shared meals, conversation, observation and slowing down through travel.

No art experience is necessary. The drawing component is gentle, process based and designed to help people connect more deeply with place rather than create polished work.

These available places are within a twin share room and would suit two people travelling together.

If Japan has been quietly calling to you, we would love to hear from you.

More details via the link in bio or feel free to send us a message.

There are now just a handful of places remaining for our October 2026 Draw Closer to Japan journeys.

A small number of places have recently opened up on our late October departure.

That tour is now nearly full, and we’ve recently opened a second tour.

If you’ve been following along quietly, wondering if this might be something for you, this is a gentle invitation to take a closer look.

Draw Closer is a slower, more intentional way of travelling through Japan.

In a world that often feels so rushed, this is something quite different.

We spend time in places that invite stillness and attention.
We draw, we notice, we share meals, and we experience Japan in a way that feels thoughtful and culturally grounded.

If you’re feeling the pull, we’d love to hear from you.

Draw Closer to Japan 2026 is now fully booked.

We are so grateful for the beautiful group of women who will be joining us this year.

Due to additional enquiries, we are now exploring the possibility of a second tour. This will run from 15 - 25 October. $7000 per person, twin share.

This tour will only go ahead if we reach a minimum number of participants.

If you had been hoping to join us, we’d love to hear from you.

The thread that connects me to Japan

I was born in Kamakura and grew up between Japan and Australia in a bilingual household.

When I was six, my family spent a year living in rural Japan, where I attended a local Japanese primary school. At the time it simply felt like childhood, but looking back I can see how deeply those experiences shaped my connection to Japan.

Over the years, that thread has continued to weave its way through my life and eventually led to the creation of Draw Closer.

I recently wrote a short piece reflecting on that journey.

If you’d like to read it, you can find it via the link in bio.

We have one twin share room remaining for our Autumn in Japan 2026 journey.

This can be booked by two friends travelling together, or by a solo traveller open to sharing within our small, thoughtfully curated group.

On our previous journey, the women arrived not knowing each other. By the end, shared meals, quiet temple mornings and creative moments had gently woven everyone together.

If you’ve been considering joining us, this may be your moment.
