𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐊 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
On 6 October, Suryan Wirya-Simunovic, CEO & Director of MOL (Europe Africa) Ltd, joined the opening panel at the UK Chamber of Shipping’s conference, Shipping UK, held at the QEII Centre in London. The event brought together global shipping leaders, policymakers and experts for a day of insight and debate on the maritime sector’s future.
Speaking on the opening panel, “The triple imperative: How sustainability, security and regulation define the 2030 maritime landscape”, Suryan reaffirmed MOL’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 through technology and fuel optionality. He also emphasised the importance of a predictable, globally aligned regulatory framework to support confident, long-term decision-making.
The wide-ranging discussion explored several key priorities for the industry:
• Decarbonisation challenges across different shipping segments
• Energy efficiency as a means of progress within our operational control
• Alternative fuel pathways and regulatory alignment
• Freedom of navigation, security and resilience
• Seafarer recruitment, upskilling and retention
A central message emerged: sustainability, security and regulation cannot be treated as separate discussions. Progress on decarbonisation and the foundations of the maritime sector depend on secure global trade, resilient supply chains and regulatory certainty.
During the day, Alex Green, Head of New Fuels at MOL (Europe Africa) Ltd, also shared insights into MOL’s multi-fuel approach to decarbonisation, highlighting our ongoing efforts and practical experience in supporting a pragmatic and resilient transition towards a more sustainable future. With MOL's roots in the UK dating back to 1917, we also discussed our work across the UK innovation ecosystem including our engagement with academia and investment in emerging technologies.
