What to do in Japan in September 🇯🇵⬇️

September in Japan is the start of the transition from summer to autumn. It can still be hot and humid in many parts of the country, but it’s usually a little easier to travel than in August.

It’s a great month to enjoy late summer atmosphere, traditional festivals, seasonal flowers like higanbana, and the first autumn colours in places like Hokkaido or the mountains 🍂✨

Yes, it’s still part of typhoon season, so a little flexibility is always a good idea, but September can be a really nice time to visit Japan and experience a quieter side of the season.

Vous partez au Japon en septembre ? 🇯🇵🍂

Septembre marque doucement la transition entre l’été et l’automne. Les températures restent encore élevées dans une grande partie du pays, mais les premiers paysages automnaux commencent déjà à apparaître dans les régions montagneuses et au nord du Japon.

Nakatsukasa Magotaro Inari Shrine is a tiny shrine in Fukuoka known for its unusual futuristic surroundings, which have earned it the nickname “Cyber Shrine.”

📍Palm Tree Swing

A photogenic seaside spot featuring large swings hanging between palm trees, with views directly over the ocean. A popular stop along the Itoshima coast.

📍Zoro statue Kumamoto

A life-size statue of Roronoa Zoro from One Piece, installed as part of Kumamoto’s One Piece Kumamoto Revival Project following the 2016 earthquakes.
📍 Ozu Central Park, Ozu, Kumamoto Prefecture

📍Umino hotel Hajime

A seaside hotel and onsen overlooking Beppu Bay, with baths where you can relax while enjoying views of the ocean.

📍Sanno shrine

One of the most striking reminders of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Half of the torii gate at Sannō Shrine was destroyed in 1945, while the other half remained standing.
📍 Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture

📍Miyajidake Shrine

A beautiful shrine famous for its enormous shimenawa sacred rope and the spectacular “Path of Light”, when the setting sun aligns perfectly with the road leading from the shrine toward the sea.
📍 Fukutsu, Fukuoka Prefecture

📍Tenso shrine

Tenso Shrine is a small shrine hidden beside Kinrin Lake in Yufuin. Its torii stands right by the water, surrounded by forest and the peaceful scenery of the lake.

📍Sakurai Futamigaura

Sakurai Futamigaura is one of Itoshima’s most iconic coastal spots, known for its white torii facing the sea and the sacred Meoto Iwa, or “Married Couple Rocks.”

📍Ainoshima

A small island off the coast of Fukuoka known for its large population of free-roaming cats. You can reach it by a short ferry ride and explore the island on foot.

Tokyo is so much more than Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa and the few neighborhoods you see in every itinerary.
