Tokyo vs Osaka - the eternal debate.

Both are incredible but completely different vibes. Tokyo’s fast-paced and modern, Osaka’s laid-back with unbeatable food. Tokyo’s got the nightlife, Osaka’s easier on the wallet. 💰

The essentials every japan traveler needs to know before landing:

🚬 smoking laws

can’t smoke on the streets in most major cities but smoking indoors at some izakayas is fine
look for designated smoking areas near train stations
fines can apply if caught smoking while walking

🎨 tattoo policy

many traditional onsens and public baths don’t allow visible tattoos
tattoo-friendly alternatives exist in bigger cities
private baths at ryokans are always an option

💴 no tipping culture

tipping can actually be seen as rude or confusing
exceptional service is already built into the experience
if you try to tip, don’t be surprised if the money gets returned

🗑️ the mystery of missing bins

public trash cans are extremely rare across japan
bring a small bag to carry rubbish until finding a bin
convenience stores sometimes have bins outside

🚶 escalator etiquette

tokyo: stand on the LEFT, walk on the right
osaka: stand on the RIGHT, walk on the left
blocking the passing lane will get you some looks

🍡 eating on the go

walking while eating is generally frowned upon
street food vendors expect you to eat nearby, not walk away

Ichiran Ramen, Japan 🍜

Such a unique experience — individual booths, no talking, no distractions… just you and the ramen. It really lets you focus on the flavours, and honestly, it is brilliant. The whole setup feels very “Japan” and definitely worth trying at least once.

That said… be prepared to wait. The queues can be long, especially in popular areas, and while the ramen is great, you can absolutely find ramen just as good (if not better) elsewhere in Japan without the wait.

Still, for the experience alone? Amazing.
