If you visit Japan in August, you might spot something quite unusual: a cucumber and an eggplant standing on tiny wooden legs! 🥒🍆

In Japan, these are called Shōryō-uma (Spirit Horse) and Shōryō-ushi (Spirit Cow). They are an essential part of Obon, a summer tradition dedicated to honoring and welcoming our ancestors.

There is a beautiful, deeply human story behind these vegetable animals:

The Cucumber Horse is made for speed—so our ancestors can travel back home to us as fast as possible. 🐎

The Eggplant Cow is made to move slowly and carry heavy gifts—so they can take their time returning to the spirit world, as if we are wishing they could stay just a little longer. 🐄

Beyond the colorful lanterns and summer festivals, Obon is ultimately about memory, family connection, and love across generations. 🌸

Did you know that 1,000 years ago, both Western and Eastern ancestors faced the exact same practical design problem? 🤯

In Kanji, numbers built up logically:
1 = 一, 2 = 二, 3 = 三...
So why isn't 4 written with 4 horizontal lines (亖)?

The answer is surprisingly relatable: human eyes struggle to count 4 identical lines at a quick glance!

In fact, the ancient Romans dealt with the exact same issue. While they started with I, II, and III, they eventually used IV instead of IIII to avoid confusion.

Whether in ancient China or ancient Rome, our ancestors shared the same human instincts.

There is a quiet elegance in the way the Japanese language bridges space, time, and history. ⛩️✨

In today’s short Kanji Quiz, we look at two of Japan’s most famous cities: Tokyo (東京) and Kyoto (京都).

While they seem completely distinct to the modern eye, they share a fascinating linguistic loop:

Read horizontally, the first row forms 東京 (Tou-kyou) — the "Eastern Capital."

Read vertically, the first column forms 京都 (Kyou-to) — the historic "Capital City."

With just two characters—東 (East) and 京 (Capital)—history shifted. When the imperial capital moved from Kyoto in 1868, the new home in the east was named Tokyo (literally, the Eastern Kyoto).

It’s a simple word puzzle, but it reflects how Japanese surnames and place names hold layers of history, waiting to be uncovered. 🌸
