[Authentic Echizen Crab! 🦀 : Fukui]

Did you know that winter in Japan is the season for a special kind of getaway: a trip just for crab? ❄️

Some people travel for hours simply to sit down to a feast of fresh, delicious crab. And one of the best places to do it is Fukui Prefecture.

Fukui’s signature Echizen Crab is a premium brand of male snow crab caught in the waters off Fukui. With a history spanning more than 500 years, it is Japan’s oldest branded crab and the only snow crab in Japan known to be offered to the Imperial Family.

So, what makes Echizen Crab so special? It comes down to the rich fishing grounds off the coast of Fukui. Abundant food, favorable water temperatures, and ocean currents help the crabs develop thick, meaty legs packed with an elegant sweetness and delicate umami.

The season runs from November 6 through March 20, so this is a winter treat you can only enjoy for a limited time. Have it simply boiled, or try it as sashimi, grilled, or in a steaming crab hot pot.

For the full Fukui experience, enjoy Echizen Crab at a local restaurant, or book a stay with a crab feast included and pair your meal with a relaxing soak in a hot spring.

This winter, why not make the journey to Fukui for a meal worth traveling for? 🦀

✈️ From Centrair to Fukui
Take the train from the airport to Nagoya Station, then catch a bus to Fukui Station East Exit.

[Experience the Divine🍁: Kamikochi, Nagano]

Kamikochi is a permanent fixture on any list of Japan’s "must-see" landscapes.

Perched at 1,500 meters in the heart of Nagano, this premier mountain resort is a masterpiece of untouched nature, defined by the crystal-clear Azusa River and the towering peaks of the Japanese Alps. Its ethereal beauty is so profound that it has long been revered as "the place where the gods descend."

When autumn arrives, the scenery turns truly magical. The fiery reds and golds of the forest reflect onto the emerald waters of the Azusa River, creating a contrast against the sky and mountains that looks like a masterpiece on canvas. It’s easy to see why this spot is considered one of Japan’s most celebrated autumn foliage destinations.

The best part? You don’t need to be a pro hiker to enjoy these views. For a perfect introduction, take the leisurely two-hour round-trip trek from the iconic Kappabashi Bridge to the mystical Myojin Pond. Simply wandering through the woods and along the riverbanks in the crisp mountain air is enough to fully immerse yourself in the grandeur of the Alps.

📍Kappabashi Bridge
The quintessential Kamikochi photo spot. With the Hotaka Range soaring in the background and the shimmering Azusa River below, it’s a great place to start your journey, surrounded by charming cafes and souvenir shops.

📍Myojin Pond
Set within the grounds of Hotaka Shrine's Okumiya, Myojin Pond is a place of quiet stillness. The surrounding mountains and autumn colors reflect perfectly on its glass-like surface, creating a view that feels almost otherworldly.

Peak foliage usually hits between early and mid-October. Thanks to the high elevation, autumn arrives here much earlier than in the cities, offering a vibrant, first-row seat to the season’s colors.

🍂What to wear: Layering is key! Since mountain weather is unpredictable, be sure to bring a windproof and waterproof outer layer, such as a down jacket, to stay cozy.

✈️ From Centrair to Kamikochi
Take the train from Centrair to Nagoya Station, then board an express bus to Kamikochi. Reservations are required for the express bus.

[Japan’s Premier Sacred Site and a Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey ⛩️: Ise Jingu, Mie Prefecture]

With a legacy spanning two millennia, Ise Jingu stands at the very heart of Japan, revered as the most sacred among the nation's roughly 80,000 Shinto shrines. For centuries, the Japanese people have held a simple belief: everyone should visit Ise at least once in their lifetime. In eras past, pilgrims would trek for days, crossing great distances to reach this hallowed ground — a testament to its profound significance in the Japanese soul. 🙏

The shrine's prestige now resonates far beyond Japan's borders. Having been named one of TIME Magazine's "World's Greatest Places 2026" it is rightfully claiming its place on the global stage.

The sanctuary is centered around two main shrines: the Naiku (Kotai Jingu) and the Geku (Toyouke Daijingu) .
Stepping onto the grounds, you are greeted by an approach lined with towering cedars — some centuries old — the crystalline waters of the Isuzu River, scent of cypress from the shrine architecture. There is a palpable shift in the atmosphere the moment you enter; the air feels purer, more sacred. 🌳

One of the most remarkable aspects of Ise Jingu is the Shikinen Sengu, a tradition spanning 1,300 years in which the shrine buildings are meticulously rebuilt every 20 years. The next grand ritual is slated for 2033, and preparations are already in motion. Visitors during this cycle may be fortunate enough to see the old and new shrines standing side by side, or catch a glimpse of the traditional festivals that accompany this transition.

After your pilgrimage, immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of Oharai-machi and Okage Yokocho. These charming districts recreate the nostalgic atmosphere of the Edo period, with streets lined with bustling shops and eateries. Here, you can savor local delicacies like the thick, soft Ise udon or the iconic akafuku mochi — the perfect way to round out your journey. 🍡

✈️ From Centrair to Ise Jingu (Naiku)
Take the train from the airport to Nagoya Station. From Nagoya Station, take the train to Iseshi Station. From Iseshi Eki-mae bus stop, take the bus and get off at Naiku-mae, then walk about 11 minutes.

[Sushi Lovers, This One's for You🍣: Kanazawa, Ishikawa]

If you're looking for some of the best sushi in Japan, make Kanazawa your next stop.

Facing the Sea of Japan, Kanazawa is blessed with rich fishing grounds where warm and cold ocean currents meet. The result? An incredible variety of fresh seafood is landed here year-round, earning the city a reputation as one of Japan's top destinations for seafood lovers.

From sweet shrimp that melt in your mouth to rich winter yellowtail, premium blackthroat seaperch, and the famous Kano crab, Kanazawa offers an unforgettable taste of the sea. 🦀

With seafood this exceptional, it's no surprise that Kanazawa is also one of Japan's best places to enjoy sushi. 🍣 In fact, it's known as a city of sushi lovers. Local diners have high expectations, and fierce competition pushes restaurants to continually raise the bar. Whether you choose an upscale sushi restaurant or a conveyor-belt sushi spot, you're in for an amazing meal.

Even better, many conveyor-belt sushi restaurants prepare each piece to order, with skilled chefs hand-forming every piece of sushi after you order. The quality is so impressive that you may find yourself wondering, "This is conveyor-belt sushi?"—all at surprisingly reasonable prices.

To experience Kanazawa's seafood culture at its liveliest, don't miss Omicho Market.

With more than 300 years of history and around 170 shops, it's known as Kanazawa's Kitchen. Enjoy freshly made sushi and seafood rice bowls, browse stalls piled high with seasonal seafood and crab, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of one of Japan's great food markets.

Seafood also plays a starring role in many of Kanazawa's local specialties, so don't stop at sushi. Be sure to try Kanazawa oden, featuring ingredients such as crab, shrimp, and shellfish, or savor traditional Kaga cuisine, where seasonal seafood takes center stage. 🐟

[Experience History & Local Flavors 🐚: Ama Hut Experience: Mie Prefecture]

Ama are traditional female divers who free-dive into the ocean—without any oxygen tanks—to gather seafood. This Japanese tradition has spanned over 2,000 years, but with their numbers dwindling annually, the Ama have become a rare and precious part of Japan's heritage. Of the approximately 1,200 Ama remaining in Japan today, nearly half live in Toba and Shima City, Mie Prefecture. The Ama Hut Experience offers a unique chance to meet and talk with these remarkable women.

An Ama Hut is a cozy gathering spot where divers warm themselves by the hearth and chat after a long day of fishing. Nowadays, these huts are open to visitors. During an Ama Hut Experience, you can watch as the Ama grill fresh seafood right before your eyes while they share stories about their fishing trips and traditional way of life 🐟. It’s an incredibly popular experience for international travelers, combining the freshest local catches with a deep dive into Japanese history and culture.

"How old were you when you started?" "What’s the toughest part of the job?" — Don't be shy! Feel free to ask them anything. This is a truly rare opportunity to connect with a community that is becoming harder to find even within Japan.

*Note: The Ama primarily speak Japanese. While you can still enjoy the atmosphere without knowing the language, we recommend bringing an interpreter if you’d like to have a deeper conversation. 🗣️

Take the train from the airport to Nagoya Station. From Nagoya Station, take the train to Toba Station. From Toba Station, take the shuttle bus and get off at Ama Hut Hachiman-kamado (Note: Shuttle bus reservation is required).
