Polygamy is NOT Sin but it is NOT Biblical
Marrying more than one wife is informed by ignorance and selfishness. No man can satisfy two women, let alone multiple women. In polygamous marriages, a woman cannot have her husband every night. She’s neglected physically, emotionally and spiritually. Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial (1 Corinthians 6:12).
That women are more than men is a baseless myth. If you check credible stats from World Bank and IMF, you’ll see the ratio of men to women is fairly equal. While some biblical characters married many wives, that does not sanitize or justify the musty culture. King Solomon was a master in polygamy – 700 wives and 300 concubines – they led him into idolatry, and soon after his death, his empire collapsed.
That’s why Jesus said the original plan of God was One Man, One Woman. And the TWO become ONE flesh. Not the three, four or five – but the two – man and his wife – become one flesh.
Matthew 19:4-6 - “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Either one is committed to one relationship or none. In polygamy, you cannot have a quality marriage. A wife deserves her husband every night. That’s why Apostle Paul advised bishops and elders to marry ONE wife (1 Timothy 3:2 & Titus 1:6). Further, Paul advised each church member to have their own partner to reduce sexual immorality. No polygamy, no polyandry in church!
1 Corinthians 7:2 (NLT) - But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman should have her own husband.
