ISAKA DRY PORT SET FOR MORE TRAINS AS REGIONAL CARGO SURGES

Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) plans to deploy additional trains and wagons to Isaka Dry Port as rising regional cargo volumes increase demand for rail services along the Central Corridor.

TRC Director-General Machibya Shiwa said the corporation was considering increasing train frequencies following a request from businessman Ghalib Said Mohamed (GSM), the private investor operating the dry port, for more services to handle growing cargo traffic.

Isaka, in Shinyanga Region, is strategically positioned to serve land-linked markets in the Great Lakes region, particularly Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.

TANGA TAKES CENTRE STAGE AHEAD OF DECEMBER OIL EXPORTS

Tanga is positioning itself to become one of East Africa’s most important oil export gateways as Uganda prepares to ship its first commercial cargo of crude through Tanzania, opening a new chapter in the region’s maritime and energy trade.

Uganda plans to load its first commercial cargo of Pearl Sweet crude in December, with production initially coming from the CNOOC-operated Kingfisher field before rising as the larger Tilenga development comes on stream.

Production from the two projects is eventually expected to reach about 230,000 barrels per day, although volumes will increase progressively as the fields are developed.

PORT-LINKED SEZS GIVE FRESH PUSH TO KENYA’S COASTAL ECONOMY

Kenya’s coast is emerging as a major industrial and logistics platform, with fresh private investment in Mombasa and proposed energy and agro-processing projects in Lamu giving new momentum to the country’s Special Economic Zone (SEZ) strategy.

The latest development is the formalization of a joint venture between Dubai-based logistics giant DP World and Kenya’s GulfCap Africa to develop a 222-hectare Mombasa Industrial Park, less than 20 kilometres from the Port of Mombasa.

The agreement, signed in Nairobi in the presence of President William Ruto, moves the project beyond the initial partnership announced in August and establishes the corporate structure for implementation. The first phase will cover 40 hectares.

TANZANIA TARGETS BLUE ECONOMY INVESTMENT THROUGH LEGAL REFORMS

Tanzania is reviewing laws governing its blue economy in a move aimed at removing investment barriers and unlocking a sector that could become an increasingly important engine of growth, employment and regional trade.

The Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs said the review was necessary to ensure that laws governing marine and other aquatic resources keep pace with investment opportunities while protecting the country’s natural wealth.

Neema Mwanga, Director of the Natural Wealth and Resources Oversight Unit at the ministry, said the government was examining regulations that could be discouraging investment in the blue economy.

KENYA’S 10 MILLION TONNES RAIL CARGO HAUL OFFERS UGANDA LESSONS

Kenya and Uganda are seeking to deepen railway cooperation as part of efforts to strengthen regional trade and improve cargo movement across East Africa and the wider Great Lakes region.

Kenya Railways managing director Philip Mainga said Kenya was already handling more than 10 million tonnes of cargo through its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and Meter Gauge Railway (MGR), with the two networks operating as complementary systems.

Mr Mainga said greater regional integration of railway infrastructure would help lower transport costs, improve supply-chain efficiency and strengthen East Africa’s position as a regional trade and logistics hub.

GREENER FREIGHT: NORTHERN CORRIDOR TARGETS TRUCKS, DRIVERS

The Northern Corridor is stepping up efforts to cut emissions from freight transport through specialized training of truck drivers and plans to strengthen coordination among governments, transport operators and other industry stakeholders.

The Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) has concluded a four-day Eco-Driver Training and Sensitization Workshop in Kigali, Rwanda, while moving towards a more coordinated stakeholder approach to implementing its green freight agenda.

The training brought together truck drivers, fleet managers, transport operators, policymakers and regulators, with participants taught practical techniques aimed at reducing fuel consumption, improving road safety and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

TANZANIA BETS ON TECHNOLOGY TO UNLOCK BLUE ECONOMY

Tanzania is turning to technology, research and private investment to unlock the economic potential of its oceans, lakes and rivers, with the Port of Dar es Salaam emerging as a testing ground for the country’s digital maritime ambitions.

The government says the transformation is necessary if Tanzania and the wider African continent are to convert vast water resources into jobs, food security, trade and new investment opportunities.

Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office, Union Affairs and Environment Hamad Yussuf Masauni said Africa could no longer afford to treat its oceans and other water bodies merely as natural resources.

MOZAMBIQUE’S RAIL NETWORK GETS $70M CAPACITY BOOST

Ports and Railways of Mozambique (CFM) is investing $70 million in new locomotives and wagons to increase rail freight capacity, improve efficiency and strengthen Mozambique’s role as a regional logistics hub.

The state-owned rail and port operator has secured financing to buy 10 locomotives and 420 wagons. The African Development Bank (AfDB) is providing $40 million, while Standard Bank of South Africa is contributing another $30 million.

The new equipment will expand CFM’s fleet and allow the company to transport more cargo by rail. This could reduce pressure on roads and improve freight movement along corridors connecting Mozambique with neighbouring land-linked countries.
