How to Move Textbooks – Topmark Quick Guide

Sort + Prep
Keep only what you’ll use. Sell old editions = less weight = lower cost
Wipe + air books if damp. Nairobi humidity warps paper fast

Packing
Container: Plastic bins with lids > cardboard. Stops termites + dampness in Syokimau/Ruiru
If boxes: Small 30x30x30cm only. Big boxes collapse
How: Pack flat like bricks. For thick books, alternate spine direction. Never spine-up
Protect: Bundle related books, fill gaps with paper, line bin with trash bag

Weight Rule
Max 20kg per bin/box. 3-second test: can’t lift 10cm? Repack. Textbooks are Ksh 3k-8k each - overpacked = cracked spines.

Load + Transport
Label “TEXTBOOKS – HEAVY + Course Code”
Go on truck floor, against wall. Heaviest items = stable base
Keep dry + out of sun. Heat warps glue

Unpack
Drop 2-3 silica gel packets in each bin for moisture
Heavy books on bottom shelves, leave 0.5cm gap.

Prep Before Moving Day
Defrost & Dry: We advise you to unplug and defrost the fridge 24 hours before. Drain water and wipe inside dry. This prevents mold + leaks in the truck.
Remove & Pack Loose Parts: Shelves, drawers, ice trays come out. We wrap each piece in bubble wrap and label them “Fridge parts” so nothing gets lost.
Secure Doors: We tape the doors shut with stretch wrap. Tape goes on the body, not the paint, to avoid peeling.

Lifting & Loading Technique
2-4 Man Team: No solo lifting. Topmark staff use lifting straps and a trolley/dolly for weight balance.
Upright Only: We never lay a fridge flat. Compressors and oil can shift and ruin the cooling system. If a narrow maisonnette staircase forces a tilt, we keep it at max 40° and only for 30 seconds.
Protect the Home: Door frames and corners get padded with moving blankets before we pass through. Floors get protected too.

In the Truck
Straps, Not Rope: Fridge is strapped upright against the truck wall. We add blankets/padding on all sides so it doesn’t shift on Mombasa Rd bumps.
No Heavy Items on Top: Only light boxes go near it. The compressor is at the bottom and can’t take weight.
Ventilation: We leave space behind it so it doesn’t overheat during transport.

Offloading & Setup
Upright Again: Back into your new kitchen upright, same technique.
Wait Before Plugging: This is key. If the fridge was tilted at all, we tell you to wait 3-4 hours before plugging it in. It lets compressor oil settle back down so the fridge cools properly.
Level & Test: We help you level it with the adjustable feet and do a quick check that doors seal.
