When interviewing a candidate for a driver position, assessing their mechanical knowledge ensures they can maintain vehicle safety, prevent breakdowns, and respond appropriately to issues. Below are key questions to guide you
1. Basic Vehicle Maintenance
- What routine checks do you perform before driving (e.g., oil, coolant, tire pressure, tread depth)?
- How often do you check fluid levels (e.g., brake fluid, windshield washer), and what signs indicate they need attention?
- Can you explain how to properly inflate tires and why correct tire pressure matters?
2. Pre-Trip Inspections
- Walk me through your pre-trip inspection process. What critical components do you check?
- How do you verify that brakes, lights, mirrors, and signals are functioning properly?
- What would you do if you noticed a tire with uneven wear during an inspection?
3. Problem Identification & Response
- If a dashboard warning light (e.g., check engine, oil pressure, ABS) illuminates while driving, what steps would you take?
- Describe a time you noticed an unusual noise/vibration. How did you address it?
- What would you do if the vehicle overheats or experiences a flat tire during a trip?
4. Emergency Situations
- How would you safely handle a sudden brake failure or loss of steering control?

- What driving habits do you use to improve fuel efficiency?
- How does vehicle load distribution affect mechanical performance?
6. Documentation & Compliance
- How do you document and report mechanical issues to supervisors or maintenance teams?
- How do you ensure compliance with scheduled maintenance (e.g., oil changes, tire rotations)?
7. Technical Knowledge
- What’s the difference between checking oil levels in a diesel vs. gasoline engine?
- What tools/equipment do you carry for minor repairs (e.g., jumper cables, tire gauge)?
8. Scenario-Based Questions
- “If the steering feels stiff while turning, what might be the cause?”
- You smell burning oil during a trip. What do you do next?”
9. Safety & Preparedness
- How do you prepare a vehicle for extreme weather?
- What checks do you perform during long-haul trips to ensure ongoing safety?
10. Experience & Training
- Have you received formal training in vehicle maintenance or safety (e.g., DOT inspections)?
- What types of vehicles (e.g., trucks, vans) are you most experienced with?
Look for:
