Can speed win against weight, horns and raw strength? 🐆

That is the challenge whenever a cheetah hunts a wildebeest.
During the Great Migration, there is no shortage of prey, but a cheetah cannot afford to chase every opportunity. Running at full speed drains its energy quickly, and choosing the wrong target can leave it exhausted, injured or with nothing to show for the effort.

That is why so much of the hunt is spent waiting. The cheetah watches the herd, holds back and looks for a small opening. 👀

One animal animal may drift away, lose pace or move slightly out of formation. Reaching the wildebeest is only part of the job. Bringing down an animal that is heavier, stronger & able to defend itself is a completely different challenge. Speed closes the gap, but timing, position and sometimes teamwork determine what happens next.

Even a successful kill does not guarantee an uninterrupted meal. After such an intense sprint, the cheetah needs time to recover, while lions and hyenas may arrive and take over before it has finished feeding.

It was Jonny.
No agenda. Just a meeting invite appearing at 3:30, as if Monday had not done enough already.
Since it says all hands, nobody can quietly disappear. One person is early for reasons no one understands. One has brought three questions. The rest are staring at the mute button like it is an emergency exit.

Simba (SEEM bah) gets all the fame, but Kiswahili has far more fun with the rest of the animal kingdom 🦁🌍

Take the zebra 🦓 In Kiswahili, it is punda milia (P**N dah mee LEE ah). Punda means donkey and milia means stripes. So yes, a zebra is basically called a “striped donkey.” Very hard to forget.
A wild dog is mbwa mwitu (MBWAH MWEE too) 🐕
A wild pig is nguruwe mwitu (ngoo ROO weh MWEE too) 🐗 The names almost feel like someone noticed the obvious and decided that was explanation enough

Not every name comes with such a neat little clue. Twiga (TWEE gah) is giraffe, duma (DOO mah) is cheetah, chui (CHOO ee) is leopard. 🦒
These words were part of everyday conversations long before travellers began learning them on safari.
Even the grammar joins in. One rhino is kifaru (kee FAH roo), but several are vifaru (vee FAH roo). One hippo is kiboko (kee BOH koh), while several become viboko (vee BOH koh).

Once you catch the pattern, it stops feeling like a vocabulary lesson. It feels like being let in on how wildlife has been spoken about for generations🗣️

How do you plan a safari when the wind chooses the route? 🎈
It starts early. The bush is still cool and quiet when the balloon is laid out across the ground. A fan begins filling it with air, the burners bring the heat, and before long, that enormous bundle of fabric is standing above the basket.
Climb in and the takeoff is gentler than most people expect. There is no dramatic leap. The ground simply begins to move away. Trees shrink, tracks appear, and the landscape starts revealing things you would never notice from the road.

The basket soon finds its own cheerful rhythm. Someone spots a herd. Someone else points in a completely different direction. The burner roars, everyone pauses, and then the search begins again. The pilot moves higher or lower to catch different air currents, but the wind still gets the final say.
And the landing? That is part of the fun. It might be smooth, or it might arrive with a gentle bump and a basket full of laughter. Either way, you climb out a little windswept and very glad you woke up early. 🌅

Swipe through the chase. 🐆
By the time the cheetah begins to sprint, much of the hunt has already happened.

It has spent time moving low through the grass, inching closer and waiting for the impala to enter a vulnerable position. That patience matters because a cheetah cannot hold its fastest speed for long. The distance, timing and moment must all be right.

Then comes the attack.

As the impala swerves, the cheetah uses its tail like a rudder, matching every turn and closing the gap. Once within reach, a swipe at the hind legs can steal the impala’s balance and bring it down.

The cheetah then pins the impala and locks its jaws around the throat. The struggle slows, the chase ends and the hunt becomes a kill.
A few seconds of action, built on minutes of patience.

If you have ever said safari or rafiki, you have already spoken Kiswahili. 👀

Those words did not begin with travel brochures or animated films. Safari means journey, while rafiki means friend. Then there is karibu, a word used for welcome that can also mean near. In Kiswahili, welcome and closeness sit inside the same word. 🤍

The language grew along the East African coast. Its foundation is Bantu, but centuries of Indian Ocean trade brought influences from Arabic, Persian, Portuguese and other languages. Even the name Swahili comes from an Arabic word meaning “coasts.”

That long history lives beyond vocabulary. It appears in poetry, carved wooden doors, coral stone architecture and recipes shaped by coastal ingredients and generations of exchange.

Kiswahili is not simply something visitors hear on safari. It is a living record of communities meeting, adapting and creating something distinctly their own. 🌍

This fluffy little cub has less than a 50% chance of seeing adulthood.

While lion cubs may look fearless, life is stacked against them from day one. In the wild, an estimated 40–80% of lion cubs die before reaching two years of age, making cubhood one of the toughest phases in a lion’s life.

A cub spends its first 6–8 weeks hidden away from the pride, relying entirely on its mother for protection. Even after joining the pride, dangers are everywhere—hyenas, starvation during droughts, buffalo encounters, and perhaps the greatest threat of all: rival male lions. When a new coalition takes over a pride, cubs are often the first casualties.

Yet the survivors become legends.

The Maasai Mara and Serengeti have given us some remarkable father-son stories. One of the most celebrated is Notch, the legendary Marsh Pride male of the Mara, whose sons—known as the Notch Boys—went on to dominate vast territories and become some of Africa’s most photographed lions. Across the Serengeti, iconic males like Bob Junior, son of the legendary Bob Marley, carried forward bloodlines that have shaped entire prides.

Every mighty mane, thunderous roar, and pride leader you see on safari was once a vulnerable cub learning how to stalk grasshoppers, avoid trouble, and stay alive.

Because before a lion can become king, he first has to win the hardest battle of all: childhood.

A lioness can lose a hunt simply by moving a few seconds too soon. 🦁
A wildebeest herd might look like plenty of choice, but for a lioness, it is also a moving wall of muscle, horns, speed and watchful eyes.
One rushed charge can drain her energy, leave her injured or send the whole herd out of reach.
So she waits. She checks the wind, stays low in the grass and looks for the one small mistake that changes everything.

A calf dropping behind. An injured adult struggling to keep pace. One wildebeest wandering slightly too far from the safety of the group.
If other lionesses are hunting with her, things get even more interesting.
One may push the herd into motion while another waits near the direction they are likely to run.
