Fascinating Facts About Ostrich Nests:
World’s Largest Eggs: Weighing between 1.2 kg and 1.8 kg (2.6–4 lbs) each, a single ostrich egg is equivalent to roughly 24 chicken eggs! Their cream-colored shells are 2–4 mm thick, strong enough to support the weight of an incubating adult bird.
Shared Nests: The dominant female lays her eggs first in a shallow ground scrape, followed by other hens who add theirs to the same nest. The dominant female cleverly keeps her own eggs in the center for optimal protection and warmth.
Teamwork & Camouflage: Both parents share incubation duty over a 42- to 46-day period, using clever shifts:
☀️ Daytime: The female sits on the nest, her brown and gray feathers blending seamlessly into the dry grass.
🌙 Nighttime: The male takes over, his jet-black plumage making him nearly invisible in the dark.
