Transit cargo is generally goods moving through a country to another destination without being intended for consumption in the country through which they are passing.

For East Africa, this can involve cargo moving through Kenya toward destinations such as:

🇧🇮 Burundi
🇨🇩 Democratic Republic of the Congo

Transit movements involve customs controls, documentation, security requirements and coordinated transportation.

📦 WHAT IS AN HS CODE — AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
If you are importing goods into Kenya, you will probably encounter the term HS Code during the customs clearance process.
But what exactly is it?
The Harmonized System (HS) is an internationally recognized system used to classify goods for customs purposes.
The classification of your goods can influence:
🔹 Applicable customs duty
🔹 VAT and other taxes
🔹 Import restrictions or requirements
🔹 Permits and approvals
🔹 Customs valuation and clearance procedures
One important point: the description of the product alone does not determine the correct HS Code.
Factors such as the product's composition, function, form and intended use may be relevant.
