The Travel Agents Roundtable at the 2026 AESATA Travel Agents' Conference brought together association leaders from Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe for an open and insightful discussion on the state of the travel trade across the continent.

The panel explored some of the issues shaping the industry's future; from foreign exchange constraints, payment systems and liquidity pressures to policy engagement, market access, the resilience of travel businesses and the need to strengthen the role of travel agents within national tourism ecosystems.

Despite the different market realities, one message stood out: the challenges facing travel agents are remarkably similar across Africa, and so too are the opportunities to solve them through stronger collaboration.

By sharing experiences, challenging perspectives and learning from one another, the discussion reinforced the importance of regional partnerships in building a more connected, resilient and competitive African travel industry.

Because when Africa moves together, we all move further.

We sell the seats. We see where travelers struggle. We hear the frustrations around fares, connectivity, visas, routes, taxes and border processes; and we see, firsthand, how policy decisions translate into real travel experiences.

But how much influence do travel agents actually have in shaping the policies that determine how Africa moves?

As Africa pushes for greater connectivity and intra-African travel, should travel agents have a stronger seat at the aviation policy table?

What should governments, regulators, airlines and regional bodies be doing differently? And what role should travel agents play?

Africa in Motion cannot be achieved by aviation alone. It requires the people who understand the traveler, the market and the barriers to movement to be part of the conversation.

The aviation industry has renewed an important call for African governments to align Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems with international standards.

In a joint statement issued on 30 July 2026, International Air Transport Association (IATA), African Airlines Association (AFRAA) and AASA urged African States to ensure that API and PNR frameworks are built around clear legal mandates, proportional data collection, defined purposes, data security, accuracy, and appropriate safeguards for passenger information.

For AESATA and the travel trade, this conversation goes beyond compliance. It is about how we make travel across Africa safer, more seamless and more affordable.

As countries introduce or strengthen passenger-data systems, harmonization will be critical. Fragmented requirements, inconsistent processes and additional charges can create unnecessary friction for airlines, travel businesses and travelers; ultimately affecting connectivity, tourism, trade and investment.

We particularly note the industry's position that government border-security programs should not be financed through charges imposed on airlines or passengers, as these additional costs can increase the cost of travel and undermine the economic benefits generated by aviation.

Africa is working towards a more connected continent. Our policies, systems and borders must move with it.

AESATA supports continued collaboration between governments, aviation stakeholders and the travel trade to develop secure, proportionate and globally aligned passenger-data frameworks that protect both national interests and Africa's ambition for greater intra-African mobility.

The question is no longer whether Africa should improve travel security and data systems; it is how we do so without creating new barriers to movement.

We often talk about travel from the perspective of airlines, destinations, travel agents, and travelers. But how often do we stop to ask: "What does government see?"

Behind every visa policy, air service agreement, aviation tax, border procedure, tourism investment strategy, or transport regulation lies a policy decision with far-reaching consequences. Governments must balance national security with openness, revenue with competitiveness, and regulation with growth.

The real question isn't whether governments should shape travel policy, it is how.

How do we create policies that protect national interests while making Africa easier to explore? How do we reduce barriers without compromising security? How do we ensure regulation enables businesses to thrive instead of slowing them down?

Travel policy is no longer just a government agenda; it is an economic agenda. It influences trade, investment, employment, regional integration, and ultimately, the movement of people, ideas, and opportunity.

As industry stakeholders, we have a responsibility to move beyond identifying challenges and become active partners in shaping practical, evidence-based solutions. The future of African travel will not be built by one sector alone. It will be built where government and industry move together.

When the Conference Became the Experience

What happens when a conference refuses to be confined to four walls? You take the conversations to the Zambezi River. You place meaningful dialogue against one of Africa's most extraordinary backdrops. You create experiences that connect people, destinations and ideas.

Day 2 of was a powerful reminder of the possibilities of MICE tourism; that conferences are not simply about venues, programs and presentations. They are about the destinations we experience, the partnerships we build and the conversations that continue long after we leave.

From IATA's role in building a more connected and competitive travel market, to strengthening Africa's travel ecosystem; from stress management and smarter business strategies to AI and the evolution of travel agencies; from unlocking growth, connectivity and commerce to positioning travel agents as market makers, not merely booking engines; the conversations were bold, practical and future-focused.

And perhaps most importantly, these conversations did not end in Livingstone. They became part of the Livingstone Declaration and AESATA's future implementation framework.

Because the future of African tourism depends on one thing: How well Africa connects with itself.

Africa is in Motion. The conversation continues. The work begins.

The Boma Cultural Dinner marked a memorable start to the AESATA Travel Agents' Conference 2026, welcoming over 200 delegates from 22 countries across Africa and beyond to an evening of authentic Zambian culture, cuisine and hospitality.
