The Yellow-eared Bulbul (Pycnonotus penicillatus) is a beautiful endemic bird of Sri Lanka, meaning it is naturally found nowhere else in the world. It is one of the special birds of the island’s central highlands and is particularly associated with the cool, misty forests around Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains, Hakgala and other montane areas. The species was formerly placed in the genus Kelaartia and is sometimes known by names such as the Sri Lanka Bulbul or Yellow-tufted Bulbul.

This medium-sized bulbul is approximately 20–22 cm in length and has a distinctive appearance, with a dark head, olive-brownish body, contrasting yellow markings around the ear and cheek area, and a characteristic crest. Its attractive colours and lively behaviour make it a favourite among birdwatchers exploring Sri Lanka's highlands.

The Yellow-eared Bulbul is mainly found in montane forests, forest edges, wooded gardens, shrublands and high-elevation vegetation, particularly in the wet and cool central hills. Places such as Hakgala and Nuwara Eliya are recognised as important locations where this endemic species can be encountered.

Like many bulbuls, it feeds on a variety of fruits, berries and other plant material, while insects and other small invertebrates may also supplement its diet. By feeding on fruits, it can contribute to the movement and dispersal of seeds within its forest habitat.
The species is currently listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, highlighting the importance of protecting Sri Lanka's montane forests and other highland habitats.

The Square-tailed Bulbul (Hypsipetes ganeesa) is a fascinating member of the bulbul family and one of the beautiful birds that birdwatchers can encounter in Sri Lanka. It is also known as the Square-tailed Black Bulbul and was formerly treated as part of the Black Bulbul complex. The Sri Lankan population is represented by the subspecies Hypsipetes ganeesa humii.

Measuring approximately 21–24 cm in length and weighing around 52–54 grams, this medium-sized songbird has a distinctive appearance. It is generally dark or sooty in colour, with a darker head, brownish body, a sturdy bill and a characteristic square-ended tail, which gives the species its common name.

The Square-tailed Bulbul is particularly associated with moist forests and montane environments. In Sri Lanka, it can be encountered in the island’s wetter highlands, evergreen forests, forest edges and even shaded plantations such as tea-growing areas. It is an arboreal species and often moves through the upper levels of trees, sometimes joining mixed-species feeding flocks.

Its diet consists mainly of fruits and berries, while flowers, nectar and insects can also form part of its diet. This makes the bird an interesting contributor to forest ecosystems, particularly through its role in feeding on and potentially dispersing fruits and seeds.
Fortunately, the Square-tailed Bulbul is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. One of its most remarkable abilities is its unique hovering technique. It can remain suspended in mid-air with rapidly beating wings while carefully scanning the water below before plunging headfirst to catch its prey with astonishing precision. This spectacular hunting behavior makes the Pied Kingfisher a favorite among birdwatchers, wildlife photographers, and nature enthusiasts.

The Pied Kingfisher measures approximately 25–29 cm (10–11.5 inches) in length and has an impressive wingspan of 38–46 cm (15–18 inches). The Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), also known as the Dabchick, is one of the smallest and most fascinating freshwater diving birds found across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and much of Asia, including Sri Lanka. Despite its modest size, this energetic waterbird is a remarkably skilled swimmer and diver, spending much of its life gliding gracefully across lakes, reservoirs, marshes, ponds, village tanks, and slow-moving rivers. Unlike ducks, the Little Grebe rarely flies unless necessary, preferring to escape danger by diving silently beneath the water's surface. Its excellent diving abilities, secretive nature, and charming appearance make it a favourite among birdwatchers and nature photographers exploring Sri Lanka's wetlands.

Measuring approximately 23–29 cm (9–11 inches) in length and weighing between 140–250 grams, the Little Grebe is compact yet perfectly adapted for an aquatic lifestyle. It has a wingspan of around 40–45 cm, short rounded wings, a tiny tail, and powerful legs positioned far back on its body, enabling it to propel itself swiftly underwater. During the breeding season, adults display rich chestnut colouring on the neck and cheeks, contrasting beautifully with their dark brown body and distinctive pale yellow patch at the base of the bill. The Brown-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus brunnicephalus) is one of the most graceful migratory seabirds to visit Sri Lanka during the northern winter. Breeding in the high-altitude lakes and wetlands of Central Asia, particularly across Tibet, Mongolia, and neighbouring regions, these elegant birds undertake an incredible migration spanning thousands of kilometres to reach the warmer coastal waters and inland wetlands of South Asia. In Sri Lanka, they are commonly observed from October to April, frequenting lagoons, estuaries, reservoirs, beaches, harbours, and coastal wetlands. Their graceful flight, social behaviour, and striking seasonal plumage make them a favourite among birdwatchers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.

The Brown-headed Gull measures approximately 41–46 cm (16–18 inches) in length and weighs between 250–400 grams. It has an impressive wingspan of around 105–120 cm, allowing it to soar effortlessly over the sea while making long migratory journeys. During the breeding season, adults develop a rich chocolate-brown hood covering the head, contrasting beautifully with their pale grey back, white underparts, bright red bill, and reddish legs. Outside the breeding season—the plumage most often seen in Sri Lanka—the dark hood disappears, leaving a mostly white head with a distinctive dark patch behind the eye, giving the bird a clean and elegant appearance.

An adaptable and opportunistic feeder, the Brown-headed Gull consumes a wide variety of food. Its diet includes small fish, crustaceans, aquatic insects, molluscs, worms, and occasionally small amphibians.
