Today marks the grand commencement of the iconic Kandy Esala Perahera, one of Sri Lankaโ€™s most revered cultural and spiritual pageants!
The street processions of the Esala Perahera are divided into two main, sacred segments: the first 5 days belong to the Kumbal Perahera (เถšเท”เถนเถฝเทŠ เถดเท™เถปเท„เทเถป), followed by the majestic 5 days of the Randoli Perahera.
What is the Kumbal Perahera?
The word Kumbal comes from Kumbha (pottery/clay), referring to the traditional clay vessel used during the initial rites.
* The First Sacred Glance: The Kumbal Perahera is the initial public procession after the inner temple rituals (Kap Nadheema) conclude. It is specifically held to bless infants and young children, driving away evil eyes and bringing safe keeping to the community.
* Authentic Traditions: Unlike the later Randoli processions, the Kumbal Perahera carries a more modest, ancient charm. The sacred Relic Casket (Karanduwa) is carried in procession, accompanied by the four Devales (Natha, Vishnu, Katharagama, and Pattini).
* Vibrant Artistry: The streets of Kandy come alive with whip-crackers, flame-spinners, traditional Geta Bera drummers, and the first glimpses of gracefully adorned elephants processioning under the night sky.
As the streets echo with rhythmic drumming and the scent of incense fills the mountain air, we witness centuries of faith, heritage, and devotion brought to life once again.
