Five metres from the beach, the water turns turquoise and the reef explodes with colour. Then a lionfish drifts out of the coral and the whole boat goes quiet. This is snorkelling in Trincomalee 🐠🇱🇰

No dive certificate. No deep water. No long boat ride. Just a sunrise walk across warm sand, a five-minute hop across the bay, and you're floating over one of the healthiest coral gardens in Sri Lanka.

Staghorn coral stretching as far as you can see. Fish in every direction. And if you're lucky, a blacktip reef shark cruising the shallows below you.

What's waiting under the surface:
- Clownfish and tomato anemonefish: Peeking out of anemones exactly like the film
- Butterflyfish: Yellow, striped and spotted, always in pairs
- Boxfish: Tiny, square and comically slow
- Lionfish: Striped fins spread wide, hovering over the coral like something from another planet
- Damselfish and fusiliers: Shoals of hundreds moving as one cloud
- Blacktip reef sharks and turtles: Harmless, graceful and often seen at Pigeon Island

Why Trinco beats the south for snorkelling:
- Visibility: Calm sheltered bays mean 10 to 20 metres of clarity most mornings
- Shallow reefs*m: Much of it sits in 1 to 4 metres, perfect for beginners and kids
- Living coral: The east coast reefs are in far better shape than most of the south
- Fewer people: Go early and you'll share the reef with fish, not fins

Know before you go:
- Season: May to October, when the east coast is calm and the south is out of season
- Timing: First boats at 7am for the best visibility and quietest water
- Reef rules : Don't stand on or touch coral, no reef-damaging sunscreen, look but never chase

1,200 steps. A 5th-century staircase between two giant lion paws. And a view that makes every single one worth it. This is the Lion's Rock climb 🦁🇱🇰

Most travellers know Sigiriya from the photos. Far fewer know what it feels like to climb it while the jungle is still waking up.

You start on flat ground through royal water gardens. Then the steps begin. Past the mirror wall, past the ancient frescoes, up to the terrace where two enormous stone paws guard the final ascent. Then straight up the rock face to a palace in the sky.

And at the top: 360 degrees of green stretching to the horizon, Pidurangala rising out of the canopy, and absolute silence.

Why the morning climb is the one to do:
- Cool start: Gates open at 7am and the rock face is still in shade, so you climb before the heat arrives
- Empty staircases: The Lion's Paw terrace and summit are quiet for the first hour, then the tour buses land
- Soft light at the top: Morning mist lifts off the jungle while you watch, unmatched for photos
- Wildlife on the way: Toque macaques, hornbills and monitor lizards are most active early
- The full experience: You have time to actually stop at the frescoes and mirror wall instead of being pushed along

Know before you climb:
- Fitness : Moderate. Around 45 minutes up with steady steps and railings the whole way, no scrambling
- Ticket: Around USD 35 for foreign visitors, payable at the entrance, cash or card
- Bring: 1 litre of water, a hat for the summit, and shoes with grip
- Time: Allow 2.5 to 3 hours total including the museum and gardens
- Pidurangala: The neighbouring rock is a great sunrise add-on and gives you the classic view of Sigiriya itself

Knee-deep in clear water, a wild green sea turtle glides up and takes seaweed straight from your hand. This is Sri Lanka's south coast 🐢🇱🇰

A leopard walked in front of our jeep for two full minutes. No other vehicle in sight. 🐆🇱🇰

This is Wilpattu. Sri Lanka's largest, oldest and most underrated national park.

While everyone queues at Yala, Wilpattu's sandy tracks stay quiet. Elephants wander the roads. Spotted deer graze beside the lakes. And the leopards here don't have to share the stage with 40 jeeps.
