Japan Airlines staff are welcoming a long awaited change as the airline introduces a new sneaker policy after years of requiring heels as part of the uniform.

For many employees, this shift is more than just a simple update in dress code. It reflects a growing focus on comfort, health, and practicality in the workplace. Standing for long hours, walking through airports, and working on flights can take a physical toll, and the move toward sneakers is seen as a step toward better support and well being for staff.

The change also highlights a broader cultural shift in Japan, where traditional expectations are gradually evolving to prioritize employee comfort without compromising professionalism. What was once considered standard is now being rethought, and many see this as a positive sign of progress within the industry.

For airline staff, it is a small change on the surface, but one that represents a meaningful improvement in their daily lives.

New Global Aviation Safety Update: Power Bank Restrictions (2026)

The International Civil Aviation Organization has introduced new restrictions on lithium battery-powered power banks, effective 27 March 2026, to address emerging onboard fire risks.

Key ICAO Changes

• Maximum 2 power banks per passenger
• Recharging during flight is prohibited
• Cabin crew may continue usage for operational requirements

These updates are incorporated into ICAO’s Dangerous Goods framework (Doc 9284) following expert recommendations and global approval.

Dangerous Goods Limits (DGR Reference)

• ✅ Up to 100 Wh → Allowed in carry-on
• ⚠️ 100–160 Wh → Airline approval required
• ❌ Above 160 Wh → Prohibited

Power banks are strictly forbidden in checked baggage

What International Air Transport Association Says

With passengers carrying more electronic devices than ever:

📊
• 83% travel with phones
• 60% with laptops
• 44% with power banks

IATA highlights that improper handling of lithium batteries is a growing safety risk.

7 Essential Lithium Battery Safety Rules (IATA)

✔ Bring only what you need
✔ Report overheating/damaged devices immediately
✔ Check battery size (especially above 100 Wh)
✔ Keep ALL devices in carry-on baggage
✔ Remove devices if bags are gate-checked
✔ Protect spare batteries from short-circuits
✔ Always check airline-specific rules

Why This Matters

Lithium batteries can cause thermal runaway, leading to intense onboard fires that are difficult to control.

Surveys show:
• 45% of passengers think power banks can go in checked baggage (incorrect)
• 50% misunderstand lithium battery risks

This is why clear global rules are critical

For Aviation Professionals

• Strengthen passenger awareness at screening
• Enforce DG regulations consistently
• Align procedures with airline operators
• Address passenger misconceptions proactively

For Passengers

✔ Max 2 power banks only
✔ No charging during flight
✔ Carry in hand baggage only
✔ Follow crew instructions at all times

These are not just restrictions — they are proactive, risk-based safety measures supporting the global vision of zero fatalities in aviation.

Flights across the UAE are gradually recovering despite the Iran war, but disruption continues.

On Sunday, several arrivals and departures at Zayed International Airport were delayed or cancelled, while airlines including Emirates are still operating reduced schedules at Dubai airport. There was a missile alert from the national emergency authority at 6.45am.

Airports and airlines have urged passengers to check updates as operations return to normal.

Qatar Airways is sending widebody jets into long-term storage at Teruel Airport in eastern Spain, a specialist facility that can hold up to 120 aircraft for months or even years.

On Friday, Flightradar24 tracked five aircraft heading to Teruel, including an Airbus A380 (A7-APC) grounded at London Heathrow since February 28 and two A350-900s stranded in South Africa since the same date.

According to Paddle Your Own Kanoo, the airline had just restarted flights through its Doha hub on March 18. It operated 135 flights on Wednesday, but by Friday that number had already dropped to just 43.

With over 100 new aircraft on order and the A380's future already uncertain before this crisis, the question now is whether some of these superjumbos will ever fly again.
