AES Lanka Successfully Executes Advanced Drone-Based LiDAR Survey in the Sinharaja Forest Reserve
Delivering Precision Aerial Survey Solutions for Scientific Research and Environmental Conservation
Aeronautical Engineering Services (Pvt) Ltd. (AES Lanka) is proud to have successfully completed a highly specialized drone-based LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey within the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka's only tropical rainforest recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The project was undertaken in collaboration with Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka and VTS Universe Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia, a leading geospatial technology company specializing in UAV LiDAR mapping and advanced remote sensing solutions. The survey formed part of an important scientific research programme aimed at generating high-resolution three-dimensional forest data to support environmental monitoring, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable forest management.
Project Leadership
The Sinharaja LiDAR Survey was fully managed by Geocomp International Pty Ltd, Australia.
As the overall project manager, Geocomp International coordinated the international technical resources, project planning, and delivery of the survey, bringing together leading experts from Australia, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. This international collaboration ensured that the project was executed in accordance with the highest professional and technical standards.
Engineering Excellence in a Challenging Environment
Operating within one of Sri Lanka's most environmentally sensitive ecosystems required meticulous planning, strict regulatory compliance, and exceptional technical coordination. AES Lanka successfully managed the complete aviation and operational support for the project, ensuring that every phase of the mission complied with national aviation, defence, and environmental regulations.
Our experienced team coordinated the required approvals, facilitated operational planning, and provided comprehensive local support that enabled the international LiDAR specialists to conduct the survey safely and efficiently. The successful ex*****on of the mission demonstrates AES Lanka's capability to deliver complex aerial survey operations in challenging environments while maintaining the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and operational excellence.
Advanced Drone LiDAR Technology
The survey employed a state-of-the-art UAV-mounted LiDAR system capable of collecting millions of highly accurate laser measurements to produce detailed three-dimensional representations of terrain and vegetation. This advanced technology enables the capture of precise elevation models beneath dense forest canopies, making it one of the most effective tools for modern environmental mapping and scientific research.
Compared with conventional aerial survey methods, drone-based LiDAR offers greater operational flexibility, improved data quality, reduced environmental impact, and enhanced efficiency for surveying difficult terrain.
Supporting Scientific Research
The collected LiDAR dataset will contribute significantly to ongoing research conducted by Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka. The information generated through this survey will assist researchers in studying forest structure, vegetation dynamics, biomass estimation, carbon storage, ecosystem health, and long-term environmental change.
This project represents another successful collaboration between academia, international geospatial experts, and Sri Lankan aviation professionals, demonstrating how advanced aerial technologies can support sustainable environmental research.
