We had stopped on a hill overlooking the valley, enjoying sundowners and capturing silhouettes against the fading light. Just as we settled in, a ranger called over the radio: a male lion had been spotted close by.
Our ranger asked if we wanted to continue enjoying our G&Ts in the setting sun, or make a dash for the lion. Needless to say, within moments everyone was back in the vehicle, G&T in one hand, camera in the other.
By the time we arrived, the sun had almost disappeared. That meant we had to crank up the ISO; in low light, you either need a very very steady hand, or up the ISO to be able to still get a fast enough shutter speed to keep your camera still for the shot. Itās a good reminder that sometimes a stellar photo with a little noise from high ISO is far better than no photo at all!
The magnificent male lion soon emerged from the twilight, walking straight towards us. An unforgettable encounter, and one of those moments where preparation and spontaneity come together!
