Minneriya National Park is one of Sri Lanka's best wildlife destinations, famous for its large population of wild Asian elephants and the spectacular annual "The Gathering", when hundreds of elephants congregate around the Minneriya Reservoir during the dry season.

🐘 Elephants: The park is renowned for elephant sightings, with herds that can exceed 200–300 animals during peak season.
🦌 Other wildlife: Sambar deer, spotted deer, toque macaques, purple-faced langurs, crocodiles, and occasionally leopards and sloth bears.
🐦 Birdwatching: Over 160 bird species, including painted storks, pelicans, cormorants, and eagles.
Best time to visit
July to October: Peak elephant season ("The Gathering").
November to February: Lush scenery and excellent birdwatching after the rains.
Safari information
Duration: 3–4 hours.
Best times: Early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) or late afternoon (3:00–6:00 PM), when wildlife is most active.
Transport: Jeep safaris with licensed guides are the standard way to explore the park.
