The Mysterious Story Behind the Nine Arches Bridge 🇱🇰

While walking through the misty jungle paths to see the famous Nine Arches Bridge, I heard an old story from a local villager.

They said that during the British colonial period, this railway bridge was being built using steel imported from abroad. But suddenly, the steel was taken away for the war, and construction was stopped. Many people believed the bridge would never be completed.

But a skilled local Sri Lankan builder believed it was still possible. Using only bricks, stones, and cement, he continued building the bridge without using any steel. People were amazed, but many also doubted whether such a bridge could carry the weight of a train.

When the bridge was finally finished, villagers gathered to watch the first train cross it. Some were excited, while others were afraid it might collapse.

According to the legend, the brave builder stood beneath the arches while the first train slowly crossed above him — proving the incredible strength of his creation.

More than 100 years later, the Nine Arches Bridge still stands proudly among the lush green hills of Ella. Surrounded by tea plantations and jungle, it has become one of the most magical and photographed places in Sri Lanka.

A place where history, nature, and legends come together. 🌿🚂🇱🇰
