One of Iraq's most beautiful minarets, standing for more than 800 years.

This is the Al-Hadba Minaret in Mosul, Iraq, long famous for its distinctive lean. Its name means "the hunchback" in Arabic.

The minaret was built in the 12th century, around 1172, during the reign of Nur ad-Din. Rising nearly 45 meters, the tower was decorated with stunning geometric patterns made from simple fired bricks. It was one of the finest examples of medieval Islamic architecture in Mesopotamia.

For centuries, the minaret was a symbol of Mosul. However, in 2017, during the battle to liberate the city from ISIS, it was blown up along with the Great Mosque of Al-Nuri.

Fortunately, the story did not end there. A UNESCO-supported reconstruction project brought the minaret back to Mosul's skyline. In 2025, the restored complex reopened and again specially made hunchback...
