If you ever wondered why we practice soft-field landings.

These frames show a Cessna 150 approach, crash, and flip over while ditching. It was reported that the pilot failed to extend his flaps to 40-degrees as instructed in the Cessna’s soft-field landing/ditching checklist.

The higher landing speeds associated with the no-flap landing caused the Cessna to land much harder than usual.

Takeaway: the FAA Airplane Flying Handbook (AFH) instructs us to use partial or full flaps for a soft-field landing when a hard surface is not available (such as a ditching). Regularly review the abnormal procedures checklist to maintain proficiency if and when the time comes.
