After a couple of inactive years (thanks, Covid!) Jocara has now made her way westwards from Tonga to Fiji, then Singapore and on to the Maldives, where she is currently based. For the last two years, Jocara has been supporting various research expeditions to the British Indian Ocean Territory, where she expects to be working again in 2024.

Well, Covid and other things have certainly reshaped plans! Jocara is now at the southern tip of Malaysia, near Singapore, patiently waiting for us to come and take her on to her next adventure, which we think might be this December. We are interested in heading west into the Indian Ocean, but are currently undecided about whether to go through the Red Sea or around the Cape of Good Hope. Suggestions and interest in joining us very welcome! We have berths for adventurous wannabe crew who want to learn about open ocean sailing and we are of course always available for charter to expeditions.

Well, we hit a bit of a snag with Fiji Customs... They changed the rules a few years ago and now you have to fill in a multi-page form and send it to them at least 48 hours before you arrive. We rocked up as we've always done and got sternly reprimanded. We filled out the form on-site, and that, we thought, was that. Until we went to check out. Then we were told that our clearance was being held pending an investigation and decision on the penalty we would pay. $1000 it turns out. Ouch! Still, live and learn... here we are taking on water at the Royal Suva Yacht Club for the big leg to Singapore, which will be 30 days at sea.

Well, after a fast roller-coaster ride downwind from Tonga (less than three days to cover 500 n.m. to Fiji) we are anchored up snug and calm in Suva harbour for a few days to recover our lost sleep! The first half of the trip we were power gybing downwind to keep the wind angle off the stern so we could fill main and Genoa. The second half we took the Genoa and staysail in and just ran with a single-reefed main more or less directly downwind in 22-24 kts. Now we're preparing for the long haul from here to Singapore, about 4,500 n.m.

Casper and John are back on board Jocara at her mooring in Neiafu harbour, prepping the boat for departure. Wind and wave conditions are a bit bouncy right now (3.5m swell with 2m waves on top) but things are supposed to calm down a bit over the weekend, so the plan is to check out Monday.

Some of you may remember the Jocara Indian Ocean Quest (JIOQ), where our family of four set out from Singapore to circumnavigate the Indian Ocean on a quest of research, education and public outreach in 2004-5. The idea was to take a stand against ignorance and inaction on climate change and pollution of our precious water planet.

How things have changed. Now the issues that JIOQ sought to draw attention to are mainstream, in the news every day. How many remember JIOQ, and how many of you were impacted significantly in the way you thought about the ocean, or the career you chose, or what you taught your students and kids, as a result of JIOQ?

15 years have passed, and now Jocara is coming home to Singapore, crewed by John and Casper, after more than 10 years in the South Pacific. We expect to arrive around 18 August. How about a reunion party? If you are in Singapore and would like to reconnect, let us know!

Malo,
John.

Update... Casper and John will be in Singapore 27-30 June, so if anyone wants to catch up over a Tiger... Then we'll be in Tonga from 3 July then off as soon as Jocara is provisioned, fueled and ready to go. Route is now streamlined; no stop in East Timor. Got any charts of Indonesia to spare, anyone?

Jocara has recently been featured in an article by the IEEE Ocean Engineering Society, telling the story of our recent charter by iXblue to support their re-surveying of the Ha'apai island group to improve safety and make a new generation of maritime charts. From inside the shelter of the atoll, it is difficult to imagine that the wind and waves are ceaselessly battering the outer reefs. Indeed, atoll islands only exist because of the life that produces the coral reefs over the course of countless years.
