Aug-2018. Maldives regional airports DG Saamy Agil reported construction works for the development of a 2200m x 40m runway at Maafaru Airport are completed. Mr Agil said test frequencies will commence at Maafaru within the next week and works for the development of all remaining facilities at the airport are expected to be completed by the end of Sep-2018. Jun-2018. Maldives Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer reported runway development works at Maafaru Airport are nearing completion and test frequencies are expected to commence by the end of Jul-2018. Mr Zameer said Maafaru is tentatively scheduled to commence operation in Aug-2018. The airport will be equipped with a 2200m runway capable of accommodating Boeing 737 and A320 aircraft and required an estimated investment of USD60 million to develop. Dec-2017. Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom confirmed Maafaru Airport is scheduled to commence commercial and aeronautical operations on 26-Jul-2018. Feb-2016. 25-Feb-2016. Maldives’ Tourism Ministry Regional Airports department noted it received expressions of interest in developing two domestic airports on the islands of Maavarulu and Maafaru. Regional Airports director general Sami Ageel stated proposals would be accepted from companies shortlisted after the respective EoIs were assessed, adding, “Twenty one days will be granted to submit proposals. After the proposals have been evaluated, the [projects] will be awarded at the end of March”. 12-Feb-2016. Maldives’ Ministry of Transport and Communication Regional Airports have terminated the contracts for two domestic airport development projects in the islands of Maavarulu on 11-Feb-2016, and is seeking replacements over the following two months. The two domestic airport projects were proposed in Maavarulu and Maafaru. The Maavarulu airport project was awarded to Moving International in Jul-2011, and Maafaru airport project was awarded to Millennium Capital. However, the contracts were annulled as both companies did not meet the terms and conditions of the contracts, for which the projects were given a timeline to complete according to the Ministry of Transport and Communication’s Regional Airports DG Sami Ageel. According to the contracts, Moving International was required to develop the airport project within 30 months and Millennium Capital within 18 months.
