Cancun International Airport has officially announced that it will be reopening Terminal 1 this August.

The Rebirth of Terminal 1
For the past few years, Terminal 1 has been closed to the public while undergoing a massive, multi-million-dollar modernization project.
The airport’s operating group, ASUR, has been heavily investing in a five-year master plan to expand its capacity to comfortably handle the skyrocketing number of global tourists flocking to Quintana Roo.
Starting this August, the shiny, newly remodeled Terminal 1 will officially resume operations.
The state’s Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, explained that the primary goal of this reopening is to completely streamline and expedite the entry of all international visitors.
The “Domino Effect” For American Travelers
You might be wondering: If Terminal 1 is for South American flights, why should American travelers care?
The answer comes down to the ultimate domino effect of crowd control.
Currently, major airlines flying in from the Southern Cone—such as Copa Airlines, LATAM, Gol, Wingo, and Aerolíneas Argentinas—are sharing gate space and immigration halls with North American carriers in Terminals 2, 3, and 4.
At the end of last year, Cancun welcomed over 755,000 travelers from South America alone.
When Terminal 1 opens in August, the airport is going to take all of those South and Central American airlines and entirely relocate them into the newly renovated building.
By siphoning hundreds of thousands of international passengers out of the main terminals, they are instantly freeing up a massive amount of physical space, gate availability, and immigration officers in the terminals where major U.S. carriers land.

When you combine the massive reduction of foot traffic in Terminals 3 and 4 with the newly installed, automated e-gates (which process U.S., Canadian, and EU passports in under 60 seconds), the days of waiting in a snaking line for an hour to get your passport stamped are rapidly disappearing.

If you are flying into Cancun this August or later into the fall on airlines like Delta, American, Southwest, or JetBlue, you will still be landing in your usual terminals. The only difference is that the halls will be significantly less congested.
With fewer overlapping international arrivals clogging up the customs area and baggage carousels, you can expect a much smoother, friction-free transition from the airplane jet bridge to your waiting airport transfer.
