Did you know Mexicans have been eating insects for centuries? 🐜🌮
🇲🇽 Insects were part of pre-Hispanic cuisine and were eaten for their flavor, availability, and nutritional value.
🦗 Chapulines = grasshoppers, especially popular in Oaxaca
🐜 Escamoles = ant larvae, often called “Mexican caviar”
🌵 Maguey worms = traditionally eaten fried or in tacos
🪰 Ahuauhtli = tiny aquatic insect eggs, once eaten around the lakes of central Mexico
And here’s the fun part: eating insects wasn’t just “survival food.” Some were considered delicacies and are still enjoyed today. 😋
So yes… tacos with bugs are actually part of Mexico’s ancient culinary heritage. 🇲🇽
-These details are documented by Mexico’s Secretaría de Cultura and Secretaría de Agricultura, including pre-Hispanic consumption of chapulines, escamoles, maguey worms and ahuauhtli. -
