Lake Como vs Lake Garda

As Italy's most famous lakes, these are the ones most visitors set their sights on. And I totally understand why. Both Lake Como and Lake Garda are incredibly beautiful, with shimmering waters backdropped by mountains. Tiny, charming towns litter both lakes, full of shops, restaurants, and bars to entertain yourself at. And both are home to natural beauty you can easily explore, although in slightly different ways.

Lake Garda is Italy's largest lake—more than twice the size of Lake Como—giving it more diversity in landscape and terroir than Como. The northern end of Lake Garda is rugged and Alpine, perfect for hikers and nature lovers, while the southern side has rolling hills, vineyards, and citrus groves.

The Dolomites, also known as the "Pale Mountains", take their name from the carbonate rock dolomite. This was named after the 18th-century French mineralogist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu, who was the first to describe the mineral.

The site of the Dolomites comprises a mountain range in the northern Italian Alps, numbering 18 peaks which rise to above 3,000 metres and cover 141,903 ha. It features some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes anywhere, with vertical walls, sheer cliffs and a high density of narrow, deep and long valleys.

In August 2009, the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
