Just finished one of the top ten best meals I've ever had in my life.

The young Kuala Lumpur chef Chin Wong spent a couple hours with his team tonight making the four of us (and one other pair of diners) some of the best food I've ever eaten.

With only six guests (limited on purpose), he had time with each course to come and tell us about the dish and it's connection to traditional local cuisine and what he was doing differently.

He was so personable and friendly, and even brought us an extra bite of the thing we enjoyed the most so we could have a little extra.

Every single bite was perfect. There were things I would normally never eat like sea cucumber and mushrooms that I couldn't get enough of.

Perfect.

The four of us shared two bottles of wine along with the meal and, altogether, it came out to about $150 USD per person. I would expect to pay at least double that for a meal of this quality in the US.

I don't indulge in this level of fancy very often, but it is such a treat when I can.

If you find yourself in this corner of the world Restaurant Shu is NOT to be missed.

OK, so... we slept until about 5pm local time, which is going to be normal from here on out.

The first picture of the set is pur building, where we'll be living the next couple months. The inside isn't settled enough for pictures yet.

We walked a few blocks to the single most recognizable landmark of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia, as a whole, the Patronas Towers, which is also an absolutely massive mall.

There, Jordyn got to try a very expensive coffee that's been on her list forever while we enjoyed people watching and a fountain show in the large plaza.

After that, we went up to the food court which...OK, whatever things come to mind when you think of a food court, youre wrong. There were, like 30 different small food shops representing a HUGE variety of different styles and flavors.

We decided to go to a Korean place. You'll see picks of our food in the photo set below. Combined, the two meals cost about $9 USD.

After that, we went grocery shopping, also in the giant mall and bought the first round of essentials, as well as some food and drinks for the next day or two.

One thing we got was a fruit native to Malaysia called a Snake Fruit. It tastes really sweet, but it oddly firm and crunchy. The entire pack of 8 cost about $1.40 USD.

The other interesting thing was that there were some products in a cordoned off section, way in the back of the store. Namely, pork products and alcohol. You had to purchase those things separately before leaving that section and have them seal it all up before you left. The reason for this is that Malaysian citizens, according to Article 160 in the Federal Constitution, are declared to be Muslim and must adhere to the religious law, including not being allowed to eat pork or drink alcohol. So where it is sold, it has to be treated special.

Despite this, there are actually a great number of bars and restaurants serving both products due to the high population of foreigners.

Now it's just after 10pm local time and that means it's time for us to start work.

Last night, we had one of the best meals of... maybe ever. On the recommendation of a friend (and the 2023 Michelin Food Guide), we visited "MáLà Project".

Most of the menu at this restaurant centers around its namesake, the Sichuan Pepper. When eaten, Sichuan pepper produces a tingling, numbing effect due to the presence of hydroxy-alpha sanshool. The spice has the effect of transforming other flavors tasted together or shortly after. It is used in Sichuan dishes such as mapo doufu and Chongqing hot pot, and is often added together with chili peppers to create a flavor known as málà (Chinese: 麻辣; 'numb-spiciness').

We began with a bottle of a sweet, white wine that we hoped we be a nice pair to the spice level we knew was headed our way and then ordered a pair of appetizers for a "warm-up".

The first was a dish called LiángFěn of Happy Tears 开心凉粉 which is Cold Green Bean Jelly Cubes in Chili Oil for a mix of Sour, Spicy, and Cooling, Topped With Pistachios and Scallion. The second was an order of spicy popcorn chicken which was beautifully cooked and had a sneaky, subtle spiciness that would build so slowly, you wouldn't really be conscious of it until well after you'd swallowed.

And finally, it was time to dive into the star of the meal, the famous, MáLà Project Dry Pot. Basically, you have a list of many dozens of possible ingredients that you can choose from. Once you've made your selection, those ingredients are cooked and mixed together with Chef Zhao’s secret MáLà Sauce. Made from a complex blend of 24 herbs and spices cooked over six hours to create a deep, mouth-watering, sensationally spicy flavor that left us literally delirious.

The components we chose were:
- Eye of Round
- Pork Belly
- Funsize Pork Sausage
- Frog Legs
- Scallops
- Broccoli
- Asparagus
- Pineapple
- Rice Cakes
- Glass Noodles

The result was almost too much for us (we had been advised to only choose 6-9 items, but yolo), but we managed to finish. Every bite was beautiful and we agreed that if we lived here in NY, we would be at this restaurant FREQUENTLY.

And if YOU plan to be in New York anytime soon, MáLà Project is absolutely worth a visit.

The dry pot is priced according to the ingredients you chose, so for us, it came out to $70. The two appetizers were $12 and $15, and since we were there on a half-priced wine night, the bottle of wine was only $28. So altogether at around $68 per person, I would not hesitate to say this was a meal worth WELL above what it cost. And honestly, we would have been fine without the appetizers and the wine and easily could have cut the cost of the meal in half without them and still been very happy.

It's amazing how many people WEREN'T stopping to appreciate this incredible astronomical phenomenon.

We sat out front and stopped everyone walking by and offered them use of our glasses so they could look and pointed out the cool shapes it made in the shadows.

We shared stories of having boxes on our heads as kids and joked about a certain former President.

This page is about appreciating the little pleasures of the world. This is one of them. Amazing stuff just... HAPPENS sometimes. And it's important to stop, even if just for a moment to go... "Cool."

First full day in Hanoi, we ran the gamut from street food to fine dining on a rooftop. All of it was delicious. I can tell I will be eating very well the next couple weeks.

But also... It's also gonna be weird. Today's example was my steak bowl with actual rocks in it.

A post of nothing but animal pictures.

Over the last month and a half, we had the chance to visit three national parks (Glacier, Yellowstone, Tetons) and we will be doing various posts about different elements of that trip.

THIS post is just about the animals we saw. Each photo is labeled individually with some extra information, so feel free to click through them individually.

Not pictured are a number of larger birds of prey including a bald eagle and several kinds of hawk that we saw flying around, but not close enough to get a picture of.

Great Falls, Montana has a population of about 60,000 people. Today, they had a Multicultural Fair. How do you think it was?

Actually...

Pretty good.

There was surprisingly little European representation. Lots of South American, Pacific Island, African, and Middle Eastern stuff.

They had a number of Hawaiian performances and were raising money for relief for the Maui fire.

Price of admission was $10 and came with 15 different food samples. It was was all pretty good. I (Andrew) especially liked the Brigadeiro from Brazil.

A great way to spend an evening in Montana where it was 101 DEGREES TODAY. Too hot.

(Andrew in Tulum, Mexico)

Today, I dived two of the most unique SCUBA sites in the world, the cenotes. (The photos, today, have captions :) )

Cenotes are caves similar to Carlsbad or Cave of the Winds with gorgeous stone formations formed over centuries. But unlike those other examples, the cenotes have filled with rainwater, making them one of the most amazing diving locations anywhere.

The two locations we visited today were "El Pit" and "Dos Ojos". We were lucky enough to have professional photographer Ernesto Ortega (Aqualens MX) in the water with us and he provided us with these amazing shots.

Tomorrow, we will be diving two more cenote locations, Angelita and Carwash. But we are far less likely to have cool photos, like this.

This is my third trip to dive in the cenotes and I'm sure it won't be my last.

(The surface shots are mine. All the underwater pictures came from Ernesto)

Thursday night we went out for a Turkish meal that was stellar, and hauled our butts up a steep ass hill to get a gander at this guy, the Fremont Bridge troll. He's something I can remember seeing pictures of in articles and books about Seattle, and it was cool to see him in the flesh. He's huge!
